I heard a 911 call a few nights ago and it stuck with me, so I did some research. On the one hand it seems like there is a love story woven through the chaos, but can there be if one year into the marriage she claims physical abuse.

His temper could be explosive. During a moment of frustration one year into their marriage, Tim hit her for the first time.
Their kids told police they remember arguments behind closed doors - mostly needling, but occasionally an outburst that led to flying objects and blows both ways. In 2006, Tim pulled a gun during an argument and threatened to kill her.
But by 2012, Jan noticed a change in her husband. He was more critical, ridiculing what she wore, how she styled her hair, her choice of perfume
Over the next two years, he threatened to commit suicide several times. He even suggested to his wife that they kill each other. Not today, she would tell him. Not today.
One time last year, Tim pinned her to the floor during an argument. She had trouble breathing. Three months later, he twisted her arm and knocked her to the ground during another dispute.
Then came last December, when he took a full water bottle and threw it at Jan's head. It hit her on the bridge of the nose, giving her a black eye and bruises. She called 911 for the first time.

Driving back home, Jan heard her cellphone ring. It was Tim. She hung up after telling him herself that she wanted a divorce. She asked him not to call again. But he called at least twice more. Jan didn't pick up.
A half-mile from her son's home, she recognized the turquoise pickup behind her. It was her husband. "He was mad as a hornet," Jan said. She still doesn't know how Tim found her. Jan sped away and made a quick left turn to try to lose him. Tim, caught off-guard by the sudden turn, crashed through a wooden fence while trying to keep up. He drove through the front yard and into the side of a home. No one was inside at the time. Jan stopped her SUV. She glanced in her rearview mirror and looked over her shoulder at Tim to make sure he was all right. Then came the gunshots. Jan didn't know how many times Tim fired, but she wasn't hit and stepped on the gas again. She called 911 as he drove out of the yard and got back on the road, continuing the chase.
Travis told his father later that day, and Tim replied that the marriage wasn't going to end.
"I thought he had hope for love," Travis said, according to a police report. But shortly before the shooting, he got a call from his dad who said he was "in a bad spot."
Hours later, Travis was home when police knocked. During a search, they found a three-page suicide note from Tim on a desk. He wrote that he intended to end his life if he couldn't convince Jan to stay with him.

Now, as his legal next of kin, she knew what she had to do. She talked to the kids. A conference call brought other family members into the conversation.
Not everyone agreed that Jan should be the one to make the final decision. It's not clear who objected or why. Was it the fact that Tim and Jan were estranged? Or did it have anything to do with the harrowing events of the past 24 hours? It was a fraught exchange, and Tim's family and the couple's children don't want to discuss it so many months later.
But Jan insisted she would make the choice alone. Despite all that happened to her, she was still Tim's wife.
She didn't stop to consider the irony that she was ending the life of a man who tried to end hers. She simply understood him better than anyone else. That's what a lifetime together does to two people.

damn, I grew up in that town, srs. I never heard of this case before.
It's crazy these kinds of stories of these kinds of relationships. You have a man who is clearly mentally unwell, and a woman who sticks it out with him despite all the fighting and violence. IMO it's obvious in these cases it's two toxic people (maybe one more than the other) who have some warped view of love. Maybe they get off on the impending trauma, I dunno.
