Driving 4400+ miles round trip to go pick up the car of my dreams tomorrow. [pics]

So life happens fast sometimes. An opportunity came up for us to buy a very special car. One of the 32 Lotus 211 brought into the US to compete in Lotus Cup. The car is still with the orignal owner who ran the car in the series. This is a factory built race car (not street legal). Open cockpit car. It has race pedigree with multiple podium wins. 100% sorted race car.

We are driving from east coast to just outside of Vegas. The car is housed at Spring Mountain Resort. (a country club for race cars). Reason we are driving, is it is not just a car we need to pick up, but car comes with full extra carbon fiber body, extra engine, extra trans, 6 sets of wheels and tires, and tons of spares.

So we will finish our summer out with a MASSIVE road trip and get to drive one of the premiere race tracks on the West coast. It is great to have good friends, and my friend offered to drive his hauler and double decker trailer out there and back. He just said I had to pay for fuel. So guessing at about $3000 in fuel costs.

We leave tomorrow and headed west. I been out west but only ever flown over it. I bought a few helos out of the west coast and flew back east, but never made a drive like this. Should be a great way to finish our summer!

Life is crazy and I am lucky to have an understanding wife for sure!

Race cars are like many things. There is a spectrum. Some are ragged out, some nice, some with accident damage...etc. It is a very hard market to say what something is 'worth'.

The big thing for a car with such low production. They made less than 300 world wide with most being RHD in the UK and Japan. The US got only 32. So spares are HUGE. This car comes with about a 40k spares package. If you ever damage a body panel and dont have any spares, you are trying to freight things from the UK and might be down 5 months trying to source and ship freight.

The car itself market value for an 'avg' one in todays market is 65-80k. The ones that have come through for sale are not nearly this nice. This car is easily the nicest one in the US. It is filled with all kinds of goodies. As an example it has a full AIM telemetry logging, data acquisition , and video system. Just in parts that is 15K in a dash, cameras and sensors. So putting a price on it was a challenge. It was harder that is was not 'for sale'. But I knew of the car and had heard that he MIGHT sell it at some point. Not the best way to come into a 'deal', but a fair deal is when both parties are happy with the end result.

I had to 'step up to the plate' with an offer, but to me it is worth it. This car, spare parts, the build and everything could not be replicated for twice what I paid for it. So given the 'big picture' I am VERY happy and feel lucky to be the new owner of a car with this history.

The guy was really receptive to the idea that I do this with my son and I think that had a lot to do with him passing it on to us. He has 10+ race cars and has no need for the money of the sale. He just is happy it is going to a good home.

This is just crazy to me as I never expected to own a car of this caliber and really it is humbling in a way. LOTS to learn still.

My uncle and cousins use to race old BMWs somewhere in Scranton/Wilkes barre PA back in the day. They’ve got a barn full of old BMWs and some F1 race cars. I recently decided I want to start going to the track and if I enjoy it I may end up trying to touch base with them to see if I could buy any of their toys. This looks like it will be a great investment in your happiness. I’m happy for you. Keeps us posted on can’t wait to see how quick, solid, and tight she can take those turns.

Naw I-40 is in very bad shape right now. Especially in New Mexico and Arizona. I’d rather take I-80 or I-70 and drop down to I-15. Otherwise I would agree with you.

Sick car but I prob woulda gotten something street legal. How do you even bring it to the track to have fun with it? Can you even drive this to its limits? It seems like it would be insanely fast and prob too fast for most people and that it might not have the stuff that makes driving easier like the newest tech etc.

Very cool, for new corvette buyers they give you a free weekend at spring mountain where they teach you how to track/launch the vehicle.

Was at Monterey Car Week last year and at one of the events they had a F3 car and we got to talking with the guy who sells them and mentions you can get the F3 cars pretty cheap used but the cost is all the maintenance/team required to be around it.

I think the generic numbers for the actual used F3 car was 0-45K and you could even get an F4 car pretty cheap.
