So, fishind never interested me, but recently I have been watching some fishing videos (majority fresh water) and I am thinking about giving it a try.

This being said, I am a total newbie, and I am in doubt between saltwalter and fresh water. I assume saltwater is best if you wanna eat the fish (cleaner/less risk of getting sick). I live "close" to the beach, so thats not a problem.

What are the advantage/disadvantages of one and another?

Any fishermen here? Any advice?

Salt water fish generally taste better. Fresh water fishing is just for fun.

Saltwater is better u might get some gnarly **** like octopus mahi mahi or sea snakes.

Salt for flavour, its clean and salted for you.

Fillet and (optionally) remove skin. Mix flour, salt, pepper and any other spices, throw it in a freezer bag and throw fish pieces in, shake and fry in butter.

Drive to a fishing pier or pay a charter boat is the usual way to go.

You won't catch any fish on youtube.

Charter boats supply bait and tackle. Fishing piers sometimes rent gear.

I've done both and prefer to catch big fish so you'll have a much easier time on average doing that in salt water. You'll want to have a boat no matter which you choose. A boat that can handle freshwater bodies of water like a Lund is a drop in the bucket when you look at how much a good offshore fishing boat will cost.

if you have both available to you then its salt and its not even close.

I'm crazy, but another Miscer that isnt here got me into kayak fishing, so I've been doing that in both the ocean & lakes (i only go on calm days)
I'm a newer fisherman as well, and honestly dont catch ****.

BUT, look up the specific fish you want to target, or see what fish are prevalent in your area, and then look up youtube videos of guys fishing in your area or just walk into your local fish shop and let them know your target. They will get you set up properly with what you need.

dont go to bass pro expecting to be helped. I asked 1 guy and he was pissed at me for being an inconvenience. HARAM

Kayak in the ocean where I live is almost impossible. Waves are crazy (even on calm days).

I am more interesting on "surf fishing" tbh.

lold its fun, but since I only go on calm days, I dont get to go out as much. I'm also looking into surf fishing soon or just flat out pier fishing so I can get out there. In true miscer fashion I like the isolation/incel ability that being on a kayak brings. You wont get that on a pier

Salt water is way better, more variety of fish, the fish put up more of a fight and they taste better. Fresh water fresh are gross. I find FW boring unless it’s in brackish water wear bigger ocean fish come by

Salmon, trout, artic char, cod, walleye, catfish and yellow perch are all delicious fresh water fish

depends on the time of year, saltwater for bigger fish and numbers. freshwater for numbers also, smaller fish and depends on the time of year. you have to know what you're doing and targeting. where are you located? I personally love catching 60+ white perch and crappie on the run but also love stripers and mackerel in the ocean while check my lobster traps

waste of time by the sounds of it, get a boat or don't even bother saltwater where you are. shore fishing sucks, you might catch a few but it's super dependent on a ton of variables that a newb doesn't wanna figure out. shore fishing can be highly productive on runs but they are short

I fish for bass from the bank with a pond hopping backpack srs. Just throw on some wellingtons and I suggest long pants so you don't get eaten up by mosquitos and tics. Great exercise and fun AF

Salt water is easier. Just get some big junk of bait and rig it, throw the line in some deep water over a bridge, you're GUARANTEED to get something.

Fresh water takes more skill, the bait is crucial, the cast is crucial, etc.

Ironically, I've had better luck with fresh water fishing. I think the easiest to catch aside from catfish is trout, but the hardest for me is Bass.

Absolutely. The "isolation" factor is the main reason I would rather try surf fishing instead of pier fishing.

Most of those are salt water fish that migrate. Most fresh water fish are gross, I live in South Florida and nobody eats fresh water fish down here

but once you get into salwater, youre ruined. its just grittier and the fish are bigger and stronger. freshwater bass fishing is queer af. and i used to do itall the time. but its poverty compared to saltwater.

Fished the Eastern Sierras my whole life. Can’t beat the beauty of that country. Also bought my own little boat at a private lake in So Cal when I was 12. Been salt water too but fresh water for me.

Depends. Saltwater obviously has bigger fish. But freshwater has some pretty big fish too like sturgeon, catfish, muskies, and lake trout. Freshwater is generally less expensive to get into, that said I've spent 10s of thousands on freshwater fishing but that certainly isn't necessary. Walleye is the best tasting fish imo, which is a freshwater fish. But that's preference, some people prefer stronger tasting fish like salmon. But even salmon can be caught in freshwater... I am moving to Miami beach soon and am looking forward to getting more into saltwater fishing. I've only gone a handful of times and love it. I wouldn't say one is any better than the other though.

Of all the trophy freshwater fish I've caught, I'd say lake trout is the hardest fighting freshwater fish pound for pound. A couple weeks ago I caught a 42 inch lake trout which weighed around 30-35 pounds jigging in 80' of water. I was a using saltwater rod and reel and I couldn't budge that fish. It pulled drag all the way back to the bottom 3-4 times. It was fun. Muskies are another cool fish too catch. I had a 53.5 inch muskie jump about 5 feet into the air once.
