Let's talk cruises

Been tossing the idea around of doing a 7-10 day Alaska cruise with the family in July 2024. We aren't typically cruise people (we've never been on one) but I hear really good things about the Alaska cruises.

Give me your in/outs of cruising. Balcony? Booze package? Off boat trips? Give me the low down.

We live in NorCal so for those of you who've done Alaska cruises, is it best to port out of Seattle or further North?

since tickets are so cheap be prepared to share the ship with nasa employees. brb slow walkers blocking hallways, loud speaker phone convos, "where my keeeids?" etc

Never experienced anything like that. Also, a 7-10 cruise will not be cheap. Cruising is fun as ****. One thing I learned is not to do so many excursions because it won't even feel like a vacation. I loved waking up early in the morning and going on the balcony and enjoying the view. The alcohol package is not worth it. It felt exhausting trying to drink to make it worth it and the same can be said for all the ppl that went with us. Also the people you share a room with have to buy the package which is BS.

Ah yes! What a great idea! Pay a trillion dollars to be next to 2 thousand fat smelly stupid people who like to look at water and take pictures, while eating overpriced garbage food.

Sounds ok but you have to know that most Alaska cruises will be filled with an older clientele. basically old people who can afford to go on them. Of course that doesnt mean you cant have fun but it clearly wont be as fun as one going to the caribbean or the like.

I havent been on one but i do follow a lot of cruise stuff on youtube for some odd reason so i feel like I have at least some sense of them.

I mean if you actually want to pay a trillion you just need to sink like 10-15k a person into a small cruise with 100-300 people and Michelin star / James beard chefs and plenty of space and not a lot of crowding.

Not really my thing so I avoid it, but with the right price point I’m sure it turns into an actual luxury experience instead of feeling like your in a slaughterhouse.

I don't mind old people, they'll be done eating way before we get there...

I've been on 13 cruises and never had a stomach bug.

OP, I've been on an Alaskan cruise. We left out of Seattle. I loved it. The day we were in Juneau we did a whale watching/glacier park excursion. The day we docked in Skagway we took a small bus tour up into the Canadian Yukon to see the sled dogs. The ride there and back was unbelievable. Just absolutely gorgeous scenery, lakes, etc. The driver gave a running commentary on all the sites we were seeing. On the way down we stopped at the The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad and took the train back to the port. The other ports, Saskatchewan and Victoria we just walked around the towns.

If you do an Alaskan cruise try to do one that goes through Glacier Bay. It's beautiful!

Balcony is def nice, especially if you do Glacier Bay. We stayed on the balcony instead of cramming in with everyone on deck. If you don't do a balcony, go for an outside room with a window at least. My mom and sister get the booze package but I don't drink enough to make it worthwhile. Sometimes I would use my sisters card at the deck bars. It doesn't really matter if the room is small (which pretty much most are) because there's so many things to do on the ship while at sea, plus lounges and seating areas so you really don't need to spend much time in your room.

Yeah it’s not likely esp in summer

It’s being prepared to go full quarantine mode if it does. Srs I’ll take Covid any day of the week over that.

Just don't cheap out. Go on a reputable cruise line with higher end costs so that the food and service is better quality and the people aren't idiots.

Yeah I'd hate to have to go full quarantine mode in those small rooms. We had a cruise booked that ended up being right at the beginning of Covid when the ships were locking everyone in their rooms and stuck at sea for weeks. We luckily just missed that nightmare and the cruise line cancelled right when we were getting ready to cancel.

This too. Most of the cruises I've been on were Celebrity, Norwegian/NCL or Royal Caribbean. Never been on Carnival and have no interest.

We went out of Seattle and drove through downtown where the Mariners play ball.
It was Norwegian in 2018 with a family whose dad was a travel agent so the price was right.
Great excursions, no sickness, great meals and dinners at fancy tables, and interesting things to see.
Glaciers, huge eagles, salmon, whales, lots of bears and nature walks. native american culture and gifts.
Great pics so i would suggest doing it.

oh and my fav, alaskan king crab with garlic butter, fresh, was orgasmic if you like seafood.
