Materialism that many people obsess over, that you don't care about.

Discuss common materialistic things that many people obsess over, but you don't care about.


Having a huge frigerator.

Having a lot freezer space makes sense, because you can mass store food for years that way if you want to. But you'll see these families of about 4 that decide they need fridges that are big enough for like 12+ people. I don't get the point.

A huge refridgerator is a must. The fridge in my house went out 2 years ago and I went shopping and they rip you off with the cubic spacing. I ended up buying two cheap fridges and getting a chit ton of cubic spacing.

One thing I don't care for anymore is new cars. They look nice but i'd never buy one knowing that they're built for the masses with little individuality and human craftsmanship. And they're getting more and more expensive. I can still appreciate them though.

Never understood jumbo refrigerators. I already end up throwing out food that goes bad on occasion, even with one that isn't all that big.


Totally agreed on brand new cars like some have mentioned. Honestly, I've never understood. Haven't owned a brand new car in my life, and I couldn't care less. Buying 1 - 2 years used makes so much more sense financially.

yeah if it’s a classic I get it but when you just constantly need the newest basic normie ride that depreciates and nobody even gives a fuk about, you’re just cucking yourself hard and forever dooming yourself to be average. Would be much smarter to invest that money into something which will bring monterary value

Watches - totally agreed. I never understood this. I've never seen any situation where anyone else actually cared about what watches you wear or don't wear. Yet for some reason, people get the idea in their head that they are different. This applies to smart watches too, tbh.

Tats - I agree, retarded.

Sunglasses - I actually have bought a few pairs of Oakleys in my day. Definitely not worth if if you're the type to break/scuff sunglasses easily, though.

Shoes - Depends on what you mean. You don't need more than 10 pairs of footwear total (some people seem to have 50+ pairs of shoes, I've even seen women who claim 100+ pairs owned at the same time) at a time. But, I do tend to believe in quality in footwear. I routinely wear nice work boots and nice leather shoes that I paid a few hundred dollars for from a legit place, and they last for so many years if you take halfway decent care of them. Asics for running/workout shoes. It's a definite upgrade from wearing stuff like Pumas (the ultimate cheap cope shoes) everyday, srs.

I like all these things (except for tats), but from a “buy it for life” perspective. Quality shoes and watches can last a lifetime. And certain watches retain their value/beat inflation. Goodyear welted dress shoes, made in first world countries are noticeably better quality and can be repaired over and over.

Sunglasses are a little different. I don’t find value in fashion/designer. But I’ll run a single pair of functional oakleys/costas/rayban until I get tired of them.

In regards to refrigerators, I don't necessarily care about the size, but the styles I couldn't care less about. Don't need to pay more for something that's going to be out of fashion in 10 years anyway. It's a fridge. Buy it to last, not as a fashion statement.

Along similar lines I don't care for all this digital crap on appliances, pretty pointless waste of money.

Having the latest, greatest phone is mainly useless, same with name brand clothing.

I do have some brand loyalty that changes with my needs but not a fanboi of anything.

I actually do get the top of the line phones more often than not. It's worth it to me.

The thing is, I make them last awhile. I make a $1,500 phones last 2 - 3+ years, and I plan to keep the one I have now for hopefully at least 5 years total. When you stop and think about how much you use your phone, $1,500 for 2+ years of use (which can be stretched a lot longer) is a pretty solid use of the money. Keep the Starbucks and fast food trips cut back slightly for 1 year, and you'll have a top of the line phone covered.

People who replace them annually are another story. That's just dumb "keeping up with the Joneses" nonsense.

Oakleys/Raybans are designer/fashion based sunglasses. They are the epitome of it.

Nothing against them, though. A nice pair of Oakleys is noticeably nicer than some $10 pair of Walmart sunglasses. The only people I know who complain about expensive sunglasses are the ones who break half a dozen pairs of sunglasses a year. Thus, they'll spend like $50+ a year on cheap sunglasses. Which is fine, but I don't see how that's superior to my decision to buy $200+ Oakleys that I make last for 10+ years. They're still ultimately paying like double what I do on sunglasses because theh go through them like m&m's.

I am on year 3 of my $250 phone. My last one was $180 and it lasted four years

Cars- so much cope around cars its insane. Reliability becomes everyones favorate phrase the week they buy a car, aka justifying a newer model. The best is when they buy new because used is sketchy, werent you just driving a used car? lmao logic not even once. If you buy new you are retarded, no exceptions unless you are a millionaire. I dont care if you are a car guy, its a depreciating assest, stop justifying retardation because its shiny. Last years model is the same and 5-10k less. Average car note is $700 with interest included. You are over paying when you buy it since covid, then you pay interest for X amount of years, all while it goes down in price even if you lamanate it and store it in a garage. Cars should be bought with cash as cheap as possible while providing base utility needs. Guys who live in the south making 40K/year and go fishing once a year need to stop buying 50k trucks because "muh bed size and much 4x4". More like you buy extra gas to commute to an office building you clown.

Clothes- we can all see you are fat, stop spending $$$ on disguises.

Cars. Kind of... I'd LOVE a Lamborghini or Ferrari if I could afford one, but in real every day life I drive a company car and have zero desire to spend money on a separate one for myself.

Designer clothes. I like to look decent and be comfortable, but I can do that in $35 jeans and a $15 top.

Big house. I used to really want one... until I owned my first. I can barely keep up with cleaning a modest sized house and I only use half the damn rooms anyway.

I can do without the big house but I would like a decent sized yard - hard to find that with a modest sized house anymore. I joke with my fiance that ideally I'd have a few hundred acres, a 1,500sq ft house, and a 3,000sq ft barn

I actually really like Oakleys because of their fit and the lenses. I've tried countless cheapo other ones, but they're just not anywhere as good. I actually LOVE Gatorz lenses. By far the best. But I don't like looking like a try hard wannabe SEAL.
