Cost of living is biting people in the ass.

Canadian money printers have been burning ink faster than anywhere else in the world. Our government told us there will be transitory inflation that will go away because of reasons. Government advertises 18-19% inflation since pre-covid but those are gamed stats. Real numbers people are experiencing is 30%+.

Mortgage rates have tripled in 14 months and are going to keep climbing. We don't have fixed term mortgages for 20-30 years. Most people renew every 5, and most people in the last 5 have been on variable rate. So homeowners and landlords (and their renters) are seeing payments skyrocket.

We put the pedal down on immigration two years ago, and have cranked it up to 1M a year. This is roughly analogous to the US importing the entire population of Tennesee in one year, year after year, for 3 years running. We're building houses and creating jobs way slower than that, so its causing incredible upward pressure on housing and incredible downward pressure on wages.

We've had an escalating carbon tax that just went up again. Everything from home heating/gasoline/diesel/power generation is all skyrocketing so we can save the world. Its also a magic system where the government will give you rebates where you actually make more money back so its win-win-win. There are still people who support and believe this.

Our weakening economy is tanking forex with the USD, so anything we import is getting more expensive. We also import everything because the only real industry we have here is selling our houses back and forth to each other with all the money the government printed.

Short answer is people bought the story, voted for it, and are now experiencing the consequences of their actions.

If you live in a low COL area in Canada (only a couple left) and you are already established in a career and house you arent desperate yet, but I have no idea what young people starting out are supposed to do.

We didn't really recover from the last Trudeau until the early to mid 90s, this one's going to be a hell of a hangover.

That "Trash Radio" doesn't point out one thing. Lots of people are benefiting form the insane real estate appreciation (especially in GTA and BC). And they are supporting the current policies even tho there is a housing crisis.

Average household in BC has a net worth of around $1 million Canadian (most of it in real estate) and GTA is similar. So lots of Canadians want the government to keep pumping up real estate prices even more. And this is done by financial ****ery (for example, extending amortizations for mortgages) and bringing in immigrants.

Note that 5% return on a $1.5 million house is $75K tax free. So most people are not incentivised to work hard. Many people just want a big ****ing house that will appreciate and hope they will be insulated from the negative affects.

Also, boomers want to keep their quality of life so Canada does need immigrants. But we definitely do not need this many and such quality.

However, people who have no savings and want to buy even an apartment in Vancouver or TO are basically screwed.

Alberta has never had expensive real estate. I remember houses selling for $1mm in Vancouver in the early 90s.

What the hell is this crap? The problem with RE gains is that they’re not realized gains. These people aren’t getting real actual cash. It’s just inflation at this point. The only way to get the money is to reverse mortgage which only old people can do and is getting harder due to rising interest rates, or to sell at which point you need to find a place to live still.

The fact is most Canadians are absolute idiots. No wonder their “wealth” is tied up in their house.

I used to say the same thing about my parents. Blaming a previous generation is SOP for the current generation.

The wife and I own our home but nobody gave us anything except for high interest rates when we started out at 13% at one point. We scripted and saved without spending money on the latest tech, eating at restaurants and getting new cars. We bought what we needed and lived with that and now that the nest is empty, we can do what we want. We worry constantly about our son and advise him a lot about how to handle money. So far so good he has $100,000 in the bank and a good job with a defined benefit pension plan and will be able to retire at 53 or earlier.

It would be nice if people stopped generalizing and assigning blame like we boomers move in lockstep. The only handouts we get are the ones every other senior can get. We have to pay the same high prices as everyone else (except at Dennys) on a smaller income. Owning a house does not automatically make you well off.
