If someone said I could never find better employment, definitely. I doubt that’s the case though. I’d do everything I could to put myself in a better position to find a better opportunity. I went from making 30k to 200k+ in year and never went to school.

the fact you are grinding everyday for less than ideal pay speaks volumes to your character/work ethic so i would say that you are a solid person just need to set yourself up (resume prep etc) better to grab something that you are better off with.

There are a lot of people like this. It will be the result of taking the easiest road and doing the bare minimum. There is all the quiet quitting going on where people are encouraging people to do the minimum and telling people there is no benefit of doing more. All that is doing is making the real hustlers look good. I've actually worked with people who had no problem with their co-workers slacking and even would encourage them to do so and then they would go run the show and make sure those who were important knew it.

Anyways, if you are 30+ and still not making a decent wage, then you are overdew for a mental overhaul because you are doing something wrong and it's hard for a lot of people to come to grips with the fact that they are wrong, and likely a lot of people they admired were wrong too. By the time you are in your 30's or older you should have an idea of what works and what doesn't.This, but I'd tell that person to go fuk themselves and then be determined to prove them wrong.

I can't imagine being so low motivation that by that age I was only making minimum wage unless circumstances dictated it (like divorce rape, unexpected job loss, addiction, etc.).

There's zero excuse if you want to make more money not to in today's world, unless you're just flat out lazy or complacent. Last time I worked retail part time (which was over 20 years ago), within three months they offered me an assistant manager spot and I probably could have managed a store in less than a year.

If you had no wife/kids to support and your health was ok, I wouldn't necessarily call the situation dire. Now, if you were the CEO of a muti-million dollar company about to go under, that is what i would call dire.

It would be nice to "retire" by 40, and then maybe pick up a part time gig if I feel bored/lonely.

If I made that kind of money, and my net worth was similar to it is now at age 28, compared to 44, then damn. I guess I could try to live that way. But by that time, rent will be $3k+ everywhere. I'd have to be frugal, and live a life of indulgence in cheap hobbies to keep me both entertained and sane.

Often a lot of people who are in their 30's or 40's think that it's too late to do anything else so they stay stuck in dead end jobs or go nowhere with their career. Making those wages they are nowhere near retirement so unless they win the lottery or have a rich uncle or something they will be working until they can't. Unfortunately at that age, most suffer from know-it-all disease and are resistant to learning.

I am 44 and starting next week I am making a big move up to a corporate engineering/science company. I've been a mechanic on various levels since I was 19. NGL, it was a struggle getting where I am now. I even tried various other types of work. About 10 years ago after hitting some serious snags, I realized that despite what I do know and what I have experienced there is so much more I need to learn and experience more, I have to do better. It's not what I know that's holding me back, it's what I don't know. I accepted that it's not going to just happen on it's own and nobody is going to do it for me. I made goals and made them happen. It wasn't easy nor was it fast. All along I had people telling me that what I was doing wasn't necessary or that there was no point, or that I could make more money doing something different. Even on the Misc "you're still just blue collar a mechanic" but I've come to the conclusion that why should I listen or even engage with someone who clearly doesn't know what they are talking about especially when why would they even say that? Also realize that most people aren't living the life they pretend to live. Fuk em, do what you know is right for you. Anyways, the job I'm taking branches out into so many other things. I might be taking college courses again it looks like to get even further ahead. Just keep leveling up every day.
