Husband refuses to pay for $700 dinner tab and gets called broke by Wives friends
If your partner’s friends called you a “broke husband,” how would you react? This is the conundrum a 24-year-old Reddit poster found himself in.
Here’s what he says happened: A man went out for a celebratory dinner with his wife and her friends to a steakhouse. At the end of the meal, his wife demanded he pay the entire $700 bill.
Her rationale? “The man should always pay for the wife and her friends.”
The Redditor refused. He put down $200 to cover his and his wife’s meals, and promptly walked out of the restaurant. When his wife came home, she screamed at him because he “embarrassed” her in front of her friends, who called him a “broke husband.”
So he asked Reddit: am I in the wrong?
One comment summed up the general sentiment: “She didn’t warn him that he’d be paying. And then put him on the spot. Awful planning and it blew up in her face.”
Another added: “This is why people in their 30s hate splitting tabs… give me my own check and y’all figure the rest out yourselves. I got rent to pay.”
Differing views on finances are incredibly common in relationships — but if they’re not handled wisely, they can become deal-breakers. Whoever’s side you’re on in this debate, here’s how to ensure you never embarrass your partner at the dinner table.

Divorce incoming
....also, Reddit.........this absolutely happened.
Last time I was out with a group and secretly paid the bill before anybody knew, I had Venmo's and cash offered to me before we left the restaurant.....I also don't hang out with brokecells and my friends almost find it disrespectful to let others pay for them.

Married him for his wallet and when she wanted to show that wallet off he refused lol. It's great. Boy did he fuk up marrying her.
But, then again, she's probably hot af and that's the only reason he married her. I know people like this. They have loveless, empty marriages, but they love to show off their vacations and possessions. Yet behind closed doors she's always asking him to make more money and do what his brother does (commercial project manager).

If it woukd have been discussed before hand and the husband agreed to it even if he didnt like it he may habe done it just to make the misses happy but to drop it on him out of tje blue and expect him to bow down in front of her friends. Nope. He did the right thing. She sounds like a self entitled sloot so pretty sure she wouldn't understand

Obviously the guy's fault. If he didn't know she was that big of a kunt before marrying her that's his problem.

I'm convinced most of the things on Reddit are made up.
Obviously a guy shouldn't be expected to pay a $700 tab. Occasionally if I'm out with friends and drunk or something, I'll pay a $300 tab for the group or something.
But I've dated a girl who would likely do something like this, and it's a sign of extreme disrespect. You should immediately get rid of her.

shes wrong here but he is stuck with her and he is the dumbass for marrying someone like that. if she expected this random night out with friends would cost them $700 then she should talk that over with him.
Sounds like she doesnt even work or he makes most of the money the way she talking about him paying for it, reality is their money is pooled, separate accounts or not. Her ordering him to pay for it she should have just payed for it, its all the same anyways.

So they got married, but never went out to eat together or with friends to know how she thinks of bills?
They're married, but she thinks "his" $700 isnt their $700, therefor defeating the male paying angle?
Their "friends" insult their own friend for not supplying welfare for them?
The husband drove seperatelly from his wife AND left her there?
He is 24, so the only way this could make sense is if he just married some foriegn chick who has different ideas than him and he is finding it out the hard way day by day. Nothing in the story adds up, reaks of lies.
Would be badass if he paid for both of them, then tipped the server the difference for the $700 infront of the group, then left, with his wife, then posted on the misc, not the other homosexual message board.

Of course its all dependent on what they are going out for. In this case it sounds like the friends were trying to cash in on a free meal.

He dated this woman for 8 years but never picked up on her attitudes to finance?
lul.
gaslighted him hard by pulling "but you're a man card" to tap into male instinct but he wasn't having it. Still he goofed.
I read the Reddit story and it actually gets worse. The wife only did not defend him when her friends called him a broke husband, she started to scream at him. Brutal. Her fault for assuming her husband would pick up a $700 tab.
Guy shoulda divorced her on the spot as soon as she said you're a man so you pick up a tab. zero respect.

I would have no problem paying for the friend if it was just one or maybe max two friends.. also it would depend if it was my idea, like if i contacted her friend(s) and asked them to join us. but if it was the wife's idea in the first place and she invited like 3+ of her friends. i personally wouldn't want to go in the first place. tell her to go out with her friends alone. i don't want to be that guy who doesn't trust his girl to go out alone and has to be clingy

he was wrong for going to a steakhouse with a bunch of people at 24.
he is a man and should have known how it would turn out.
Sad thing ism, his wife most likely paid the bill with his credit card so he ended up paying andyway, not getting credit for it, being called broke and getting yelled at by his wife.
All of this could have been avoided if he simply told his wife he is not going to take all those people to dinner.
A valuable lesson from this is to learn to tell women no. Sounds easy but its one of the most difficult things a man can do. But its worth the effort. They wont like it and will kick up a fuss like trying to break a wild horse but it can be done.
