Most people who think games aren't fun anymore fall into 3 camps.

1) Only play COD/Madden/FIFA crew: they've been playing the exact same games for 15+ years without branching out and have finally realized that annual installment games are stale.

2) they are legitimately depressed.

3) they've just aged out of gaming and don't have the time for the hobby.

Gaming is no worse than binging on Netflix, reading a book, etc. At the end of the day, we're all wasting time chasing dopamine.

With you there. I'm definitely no longer interested in certain genres, but it's because of lifestyle changes that aren't as compatible with certain genres.

There are so many genres out there that it's impossible to be bored if you still enjoy having as a medium though. It's like music; if you limit yourself to what's popular, you'll miss the treasures that lie beneath the surface.

the thing that most people fail to realize is that video games are art.probably the most complex and sophisticated levels of art and its easy for it to go over the average persons head.ill start with graphical artwork.they can create any style they want.gothic.victorian,art deco.the list is almost endless.

music.same as above.but what really sets it apart is the fantastic japanese composers.they are the best original composers right now.not just in games but anime too.

story.some of the best stories ive ever heard came from video games.that was mostly ps1 and ps2 era but there are still good stories if you can find them.alot of crap nowadays but Sea of Stars has a great story and its batchit crazy if you can keep up and understand it.

im not gonna write a novel on this topic but the best video games are a reflection of the art of their creators.it is only your art except when you can express yourself through your controller but ultimately your playing through the creators art.this is not your story its the creators.my aunt got fired from EA cause she wanted to do what she wanted to do and not make another clone of whatever they were making almost 20 years ago.thats what it means to be a true gamer and artist.most people are too stupid to understand these things.if i wasnt half drunk and burnt out from playing games all night id explain it better

OK, so I had to watch the video twice because I was distracted by work. The main point I got from it is that you should branch out to other genres if you are bored of playing the same type of games all the time. Not everything has to have good combat for me to love it. For example: Planescape: Torment remains one of my favorite story-driven video games, even though I think the combat was very mediocre.

I used to play all sorts of games, even racing games, which I didn't like as much as RPGs. I have a love/hate relationship with souls-type games. I'm really into Ninja Gaiden Sigma and other similar games, but I'm totally ass at them. The game goes from exciting to frustrating way too quickly. Games that rely strictly on how skilled you are are fun only when you adapt and can keep up, but they are sadly not for me.

I have never been efficient at most games, so I stick to playing on normal/easy difficulty in order for them to be fun. I was playing StarCraft: Remastered several months ago and realized it never had a difficulty setting. I used to play it with cheats enabled and now decided to play the entire campaign without cheats and it was one helluva experience, especially the last 3 or 4 missions in Brood War. For the first time, I had to really use all the various units and come up with my own strategies to win. It was pure brow sweat adrenaline, but I somehow managed to beat it in the end and it felt great.

This mission must have taken me over 6 hours to beat, lmao. I played it at the slowest speed. The AI somehow knows exactly how to approach you offensively and can see all of your weak points.

Sometimes, playing a game differently brings me great joy. I'm going to try to get into indie games as I have been ignoring them for too long for whatever reason.

Indies opened up a while new level of enjoyment for me, roguelites/likes especially. Enter the Gungeon popped my cherry.

Show me the lie? If I'm reading a Jack Ryan novel or playing through the campaign of COD, what's really better?

Unless you took that to mean reading a nonfiction book and learning about something, which just goes to show you're an aspie. But either way, at the end of the day we're just wasting time chasing dopamine until we expire boyo. Hobbies is hobbies.

That first point is exactly what I've been saying all the time. People are just spending way too much time chasing all the games that they had fun back in their teenage years like the cods, gears , battlefields etc and dont bother branching out or trying something new.

Anything branching out is met with boohoo muh wokeness muh politics reeeeeee.

growing up in the 90s, i've had way more fun playing indies than the big titles. I freaking loved Guacamelee, liked Oxenfree, am enjoying Hollow Knight, FREAKING LOVED Death's Door. I only play AAA games after they've been out for a while and the public's opinion on them is relatively positive and settled.

When I was younger was only interested in multiplayer. The competition and difficulty made entertaining. I'd sweat it out hard and take it seriously.

Now that I'm older I just want to play single player games with a good story and relax.

Funny how things change over time. If I stuck with sweating it out in multiplayer I'd hate gaming at this point.

Strong attention span. There are insanely few educational games.

For a guy who posts a lot of low IQ takes, this is surprisingly not one. Mostly agree with all points.

I'd add, game quality and quantity of top quality games is better now than it has ever been, not sure how anyone can deny that. Too many people look at things through their own fawked up lense and then complain as if everyone is as fawked up as they are.

As far as dopamine chasing I think we see an unhealthy trend in gaming that we see in many other aspects of society where people are seeking easy low effort dopamine hits. I find it comical many gamers these days will say games are too hard, immediately switch to easy mode, or simply not finish games. It's behavior similar to scrolling Tiktok, binging TV, taking a "vacation" without having a real job, all these behaviors causing dopamine imbalance. Nobody wants to put any effort in for the reward anymore, it's very unhealthy neurologically. Climbing to the top of the mountain feels much better than having someone drop you off there.

You see this more and more with the zoomer menu systems and the over the top marketing. If you haven't played COD or Fortnite for a couple months just open the game and look at the nonstop cinematics and in-your face advertising. People went to war over loot boxes for being predatory but these advertisement aren't?

It's just another reason why I prefer SP games, I can boot up my game without being inundated with ads and microtransactions and just actually get into my hobby. There are some aspects of the industry that have gone down hill, but by and large gaming is at its peak from a quality standpoint. Even indie games are absolutely entertaining nowadays.
