like the thread i made a few weeks ago said...owning a $50k car (average new car) costs something like $1,200-1300+ per month when you add in insurance, gas, tax, maintenance, etc.

of course a lot of people will get caught holding the bag when things really go south

I could not imagine my life without a car but damn they are expensive. Interest rates on cars are usually really low, lower than the inflation rate so "paying cash" is not a flex at all. However, outside of the car payment there is the insurance. maintenance, fuel, you name it. Old cars aren't really any better because the repairs and everything associated to that comes into play.

Usually driving far more car than they need. The amount of soccer moms driving 80k SUVs is ridiculous when you can fit three kids and all their stuff in any sedan.

I bought a new truck with a Hemi in it a few months ago and I am going to sell it and just pay cash for something. Nuts to payments and the insurance is a joke and it drinks gas like an alchoholic.

Tax subsidies

In Australia, if you are a tradie you get full deductibility of ALL expenses (the car itself, depreciation, maintenance, tires, fuel, insurance, car washing, etc)

So compared to everyone else they are basically paying 50% of the total vehicle running cost

Ditto real estate agents or anyone who can deduct a work vehicle for work related travel
