how do patches and updates work?

f.e. you install a base game for 70 GB

then an update drops: 20 GB

another: 15 GB

but does this all simply add up to each other or not?

what I mean is: does a patched up game take more space than a "clean" full install of the latest version or are the patches "smart" enough to deal with it efficiently?

Updates often replace old files, even sometimes reducing the overall file size. Pretty much the only thing that really seems to add space is content updates, like them adding things to the game.

so size of a game after a load of updates and patches is the equivalent of a clean install of the "finished" product?

not that it's an issue but I just wondered

It's a license add-on that lets you play the new version of the game on the server. Updates haven't overwritten old files since the 1990s.

Yeah, a lot of the time. I mean you can't generalize this really because the nature of updates is a hugely variable thing, but generally speaking the size of an update download shouldn't become added to the overall file size. Like I said, most of the time when updates result in a bigger overall file size, is when the developer added content, but then again it isn't unusual for general updates to add a bit to the file size, just don't expect it to be the size of the download. They can also reduce the overall file size sometimes.

like jay said, updates overwrites files currently that exist, they can also add files (size) if there are new content that not removing the old content like lets say new maps, but typically it will stay around the same file size
