People who work Overtime 👷‍♂️

Why would you work overtime instead of finding a correct paying job? People post "I make $100k but with OT I make $120k". Go get a job earning 120k.

Brb missing children growing up.
Brb tired when get home.
Brb wife has guy behind your back.
Brb house falls in disrepair.
Brb depressive episodes due to case of Mondays.
Brb work more overtime to pay for child support.
Brb gotta get revenge.
Brb ded.

-- Does not apply to people who work at home or own a business.

Overtime is completely optional at my job.

if I want extra money, I take it. Otherwise, i do not. I don't require overtime to live my life comfortably. Sometimes banking a few extra grand for some extra hours is convenient.

It’s much harder to earn money than the misc likes to pretend. Even your example of making $100k. I don’t know a single person irl who pulls 6 figures (100% srs). Most people make half that and the ceiling of their earning potential is within 10% or so of what they already make.

While I agree on principle that it’s foolish to throw your life away for an extra couple grand that will be taxed out the ass, when people have children and families to support, what options do they have? My father used to work 60-80 hours per week on a regular basis just to keep the lights on. I have nothing but respect for his sacrifice.

because tradies typically work a 50 hour week already. Their friday/saturday is paid for 30 hours of labor. Nearly another full week of pay

Tradies earning $100k extra in overtime
Total bring home pay of $300k+/year
What's wrong with that?

I know people that make multiple millions per year, that run billion dollar companies. Making money is easy as fuk. So easy in fact that I can't comprehend why it is that I grew up poor.

-you are a bum if a 40 hour work week even makes you blink, let alone "exhausted"
-1.5x pay in your primary job will almost universally outpay any other gig
-you dont have to add extra training, new bosses/co workers, travel, HR, ect to make extra $$$
-you get paid 1.5x to get better at your career, which translates to more $$$ when negotiating salary
-you become a dependable worker who gets the overtime when offered

I'm single and work 60 hour weeks. Every weekday I hit the gym, run, cook, socialize and get 6-7 hours sleep. I work Saturday and have the weekend to myself by noon most weekends. I make an extra 30k/year doing this instead of just working 40hrs/week.

Obviously not ideal for the family man, but if you are with a decent company that does things based on merit and you have the time, you'd be a fool not to be overtimemaxxin in your 20's/30's.

By the way, dont take advice on how you should work from an OSHA exerpt about workplace safety and bosses having to shell out 1.5x pay, we are employees, safety is on me and me only and my bosses expense sheet is his problem.

Actually you are a fool for only increasing it 20K, instead of getting that $120k job, just go get a $220k job. In fact, just make $4,000,000 next year then retire.

Who the fuk do you know that earns a personal income of multiple millions per year? The CEO of the company you’re employed by doesn’t count. I don’t know a soul who comes close. Not a single friend, family member or neighbor. Yeah, maybe my boss is rich, I don’t really “know” him.

A cursory search shows only 15% of Americans earn more than $100k/yr (the majority of whom certainly fall on the low end of that figure) and before inflation it was in the single digits (9% of Americans in 2019).

Yet somehow every miscer is in this top income bracket? I call BS.

I worked 2 career gigs when I first got started because of an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Did my time working far too much but it helped me get to where I'm at and now I'll never go over 40 hours a week.

Except for I don't have high blood pressure, or any other issues other than some damaged joints from the military. As far as my weight, that's personal choice, and you may think I'm fat as hell, but I know the truth. Don't get mad at me because you're poor. I am not the one who made you poor, you did that to yourself.

Google where I live. That's your answer, but even then not really because I don't actually live in Falls Church. Where I live the median household income is over $300k/y.

You're wrong about every single thing there boyo. But nice to know how much real estate I own in your head. I'll add it to my list of assets.

Single I can understand OT unless you have aspirations for something better and want to go to school. OT keeps you stuck.

I will say that there are very few circumstances that would ever get me to work more than 40 hours in a week. One is if I were working for my own business and I had investment in it. One is if I were being paid 7 figures. And one is if I were passionate about the work and it was making a difference, and the only things I would put into that category for me would be something in science, music, or fighting Jewish supremacy. But I didn't go to school for science so I don't have the necessary knowledge/expertise/credentials to get into that at this point, I'm not a good enough musician to play in a symphony, and I doubt anyone gets paid to fight Jewish supremacy at this point.
Selling your soul to make extra pennies is giving in to the jewish supremacy.

I see a lot of young people doing this. Working 12 hours a day and such. That's fine. But don't think you aren't paying for that extra money. You're spending time and energy on work when you could be spending it on other things. You brought up youth as a motivating factor for working overtime. I'd argue that the financial benefits of working overtime scales proportionally with age as your earning power increases as you grow older. Therefore if time and energy is a finite resource it doesn't make sense to spend it all in your youth making half what you'd make as a senior professional. Furthermore, i'd argue that investing in your health when you are young is a far better investment than whatever 20% increase you can make working 60 hours a week. I see a problem with young people who are concerned with squeezing every last bit of $ out of their first or second job out of college when they could be working on other things to make themselves a more well-rounded individual.

Agree, only 24 hours in the day and you must sleep, so more like 16 hours. To incomemaxx, healthmaxx and relationshipmaxx you have to give less in one of those areas. Choose carefully.

On the income to age ratio, its true that you earn more at a later age, however life gets in the way at a later age and 60/week isnt possible for many like it is in your 20's. Also, you can argue that the reason you make more at a later age is because you put in the time in your 20's. When you look at data on income to age, its usually a 10k split between 30's and 50's. That difference can be made with OT in almost any pay rate, so OT is a more powerful wealth building tool than age.

On your point about post college work ethic. Right now many people are working 60 hours because that pay is worth 40 hours 3 years ago. Its a means to survive, not careermax. Personally I'm working a lot to save for a house because prices have decided to increase 40% in 2 years while national average income is flat.

As a fed, my OT rate is just my hourly rate based on where I am in the pay scale. I make plenty of money, and at this point I value time far more than a little extra cash so I always turn down OT. If it was time and a half or double time I might consider taking it

It's really sad, isn't it? I took a lot of overtime work when I was younger and trying to accrue as much cash to put myself through school as I could. I can't imagine being 40 doing the same thing and always being away from home and missing out on everything. It probably makes someone so bitter and jaded and resentful. Might make them age 10 years in 2.

I have no bones about working OT to support a family or work towards some financial goal. But if you're a twenty-year old guy maxing out OT to line your pockets, and you are overweight, or have zero hobbies/interests, then i'd question why not allocate your resources to something that is, in my opinion, more worthwhile. You could apply for higher education. You could develop some skill for pleasure or productivity. Learn a language or musical instrument. Play rec sports. It's a lot harder to start learning things when you're almost retired, vs when you're 20-30.

I make $117k base. With base, plus bonuses, it's closer to $155k. The overtime I do brings me closer to $170k. This goes to show I don't really do much overtime... but I'll be damned if I don't try to find it often. It's all about balance. Situational times as well. I have no kids, no wife (but a GF who doesn't live with me), so I do have the flexibility during times of good health and opportunity, to make it happen. If I willed it, I could probably gross $200k+.

What is your opinion on this situation OP? Is my base too low? Should I feel bad for doing extra? Am I not compromising enough? I feel like this is a good middle ground tbh.
