AI and post-labor society

Reading a book written in 1979 about Artificial Intelligence.

Author lists major areas of effort for AI researchers.

Bolded areas are those where AI (in 2023) already matches or exceed the capabilities of the average human.
- Mechanical translation

- chess

- checkers

- go

- bridge

- poker

- symbolic manipulation of mathematical expressions

- proving theorems in various parts of mathematics

- recognition of printed text

- locating prespecified objects in photographs

- recognition of objects portrayed in sketches by people

- recognition of human faces

- understanding spoken words

- making paraphrases of longer pieces of text

- producing abstract poetry (eg haiku)

- creating original thoughts or works of art

- geometrical shapes ("intelligence tests")
This was all accomplished in under 50 years.

Given this rate of progress, how can anyone doubt computers will soon (within 50 years or so) surpass humans in all but a few niche areas?

What does capitalism look like when human labor has no value at all?

Maybe instead of mystifying it, spend your time understanding what it is and how it operates

You'll answer your questions if you just take the time to learn

I picture a Star Trek-like society where people don’t need to punch a clock because essentials are provided by self-sustaining AI and robots, money loses meaning as a unit of exchange enabling trade because everything is “free”, and people can pursue their passions and interests rather than focus on putting food on the table.
