Are other car companies like this? Volkswagen refused to give carjacking details with baby inside to police over unpaid $150.

I hope the family wins the lawsuit, but I'm guessing they have no legal grounds to win a lawsuit, only "emotional" grounds. Like with my Shell gas station lawsuit. Over an employee implanting a skimming device. And the company not wanting to look into their surveillance cameras to prove (or disprove) my case.
