WFH sucked for me, going back to work.

I landed a WFH job. At first it was GOAT, NGL. After a while, I started feeling chained to a desk. We had to use softphones and everything was on the computer so I had to be close to it, and the phone would ring 4 times and then missed call. I know guys talking about how they barely actually work when they have a WFH job but this wasn't like that at all. What's more is I was doing just one thing all day. Started getting stir crazy. Started gaining weight and getting soft. Wasn't eating much but still getting fatter. I'm not someone who can sit still so I was getting nuts. I wanted to give it a full 3 months and possible 6 months but that's just not how things happen.

SHTF. Turns out my old employer kept me active in their system. Because these companies are linked, but not together, it's a conflict of interest and I have access to things that could give them an advantage due to engineering information so it was a problem. I didn't know I was still active. I was basically suspended until this was resolved. Called my old employer and they said they didn't delete me because they wanted to hold my spot incase I wanted to come back. Offered me $30K+ more than what this company was paying. So I told then I'll be in monday morning.

Although that job was remote, I had to come in once a month, but did a few times while in training just to get some extra help. All I have to say is I don't understand how officecells cope. I wanted to stab my eyes out with a pen just to feel something. Longest days I have ever experienced. Urges to take naps. Staring at a grey cubical wall.

My job at the car dealership is a multi-role position and time flies and I really like it. I was trying to just try something different to gain more skills and experience. I did, but it wasn't for me.

I had a hybrid schedule in 2018/2019, then moved to full WFH in 2020. I had one of those jobs where I didn't really do much at all.

In hindsight, the hybrid schedule was the best. I liked going into the office to catch up with people and just get out of the house, and Thursday/Friday were nice to relax and have almost a long weekend.

Nowadays though.. I've been fully WFH for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. It SUCKS ASS. For my next job I'm going to try to find one that's in person.

WFH I end up just wasting time and I'm not really motivated to work. I've legit been working 5-10 hours/week since 2020. It feels like rotting away and being unemployed. I don't respect my time much and it's hard to develop a routine for anything because I'm not constrained by time.
Yeah, I think WFH actually would have been a lot better pre-Covid, but for whatever reason the entire vibe is off now. Back them you could get away with working in coffee shops or other places, and it was quite nice. While you can still do these things, it's a lot messier and doesn't have the same appeal.

I posted in your first thread about taking the new job and that couldn't have been more than like two months ago, lol.

I will say that full blown WFH certainly isn't the gentlest introduction to cubecel life for someone who isn't already acclimated to rotting in an office or at home. Even on days when I don't need to go into the office, I still do most of the time because it's only 15 minutes away and I prefer not working at home.

WTH are you talking about? You're clearly doing it all wrong.

1. Gaining weight by WFH? You're at HOME you can buy a standing desk and one of those office treadmills and walk while you work

2. Stir crazy? Are you really that anxious to burn gas in scorching heat or freezing weather in a commute only to get to the office to listen to Amanda complain about her allergies or her headaches for the 15th time in a week? Or better yet, Jim, the 50 year old man-child who would wear a sports jersey to work if he could get away with it drone on and on about last nights "sports ball game?" is that what you're "longing" for?

3. How are you not eating when you WFH? Get up out of your office chair, walk the 15' to your fridge pull out the foods you normally eat and just eat it. Its not that hard. Or do you prefer to eat in the break room at work where you have to deal with the smells from the reheated curry from the ****** that works in IT? Or better yet you simply forget your lunch and you have to waste more gas and money buying some chitty fast food for lunch.

Pre-covid I would go out in the middle of the day and places weren't too crowded, roads were empty, but nowadays doesn't matter if you're out at 12PM or 6PM, same rush. The novelty wears off.
Another really chitty thing is that WFH has mostly killed Happy Hour.

Happy Hours used to be my favorite chit ever. Hit the bars at 5PM on Friday, drink like 6 beers with the boys and maybe get a bag of Pepsi, and roll it into a super fun night. But now it's a nightmare getting people out of their homes to do these things, and the downtown "atter work" vibe fuking sucks.

Happy hour? That sounds like a great way to get fired.

Why not go out with friends/family?

I’m saying happy hour was with friends. But now everybody is always doing other things(and hasn’t worked at all on Fridays) and it doesn’t have that “we’re all meeting after a long work week to blow off steam” vibe.

Basically nobody actually works anymore or feels sense of accomplishment, so they don’t celebrate anything.

Bunch of officecel brainwashed cucks ITT

I'm a WFHcel and it's GOAT

Everything is on my phone so I can be out doing anything but still join meetings, reply to chat message, reply to emails and more. If staying at home, can watch TV, take naps, and whatever I want.

I've also traveled internationally this year to work remotely and my employer was none the wiser. I'll be booking flights soon to work remotely from another country in the new year.

Yeah, it was a dream at one point. I took a paycut to do it. To learn. No chit, I learned a lot while I was there. Really pushed me. It's not an easy job to get. When a dealership's service department can't fix a vehicle, they call a technical line so we can figure it out and walk them through the repair. 10hrs of interviews was rough where they really run you through the rigors to say the least although I signed papers where I can't talk about that. First month was just training. I thought I could fix cars when I came there, felt like a moron that first month. Although once I was on my own, I'd say I did alright although I wasn't near as efficient as some of those guys that had been there for years. I think I had one real fuk up where I failed to ask the right questions on an EV with a battery issue and resulted in more work being done but I was nervous about pulling the trigger on a $20,000 electric car battery and the mechanic got all pissed off about it even though he's being paid for that extra work but I mean, you do a job tha tis high skill where you are advising other high skill people, it's going to happen.

So it came down to where I had to pick an employer, and to me it was a no-brainer. One reason I never officially resigned from my job was that I kind of knew I wasn't going to work out. The fact that I got that job was one of those "I made it" things, like a top tier goal of mine, and what I learned there was kind of something where I couldn' get anywhere else. I wish it could have lasted a little bit longer.

Obviously you want flexibility - the choice of remote/on-site. sometimes its easier to concentrate and get stuff done at the office. working, where you live or sleep, ruins it for you since your home doesnt feel like home anymore

Nope, I didn't forget. There was just so much to unpack in OP's ridiculous post it got overshadowed by everything else. I was over-employed for a short period of time (contract role) with my hybrid job (a part time position) I was just raking in the cash for that 3 month time period. It was very nice bringing home about $11k (NET) per month. Unfortunately I finished the project and the contract ended so i'm on the hunt for another contracted remote role.

Its not illegal if thats what you're concerned about. The only way an issue can arise is if you're working for a competitor (not a good idea to work for Pepsi if you're already working for Coca Cola), but you're safe if its just some other job unrelated to your main job.

Of all the ways I've heard of people getting caught, its from stupid things they cause on their own. ex;

-trying to join two meetings occurring simultaneously at both jobs and accidentally talking about the progress of a project that you're not even working on

-having two sets of headphones in plain view of the camera during meetings

etc

-For your second job, you don't want to be an overachiever because you'll just be rewarded with more responsibilities and you don't want that. You want to remain as anonymous as possible....just a worker bee in the background. Which brings me to my next point;

-Its best to apply to jobs with large teams (>200) so you get "lost" among the staff. If you're in some small start-up, you'll have upper management down your back and watching over you and everyone else (asking pointless questions just to converse, asking about the progress of projects etc) the entire 8 hour shift.

-As for payroll, there's nothing to be concerned about there either. If both of your jobs are using ADP or Kronos or whatever clocking system, they are still completely separate from one another because each job assigns a specific ID number to the company.

The long and short of it is, there's really no reason NOT to exploit WFH as much as you can. Its slowly fizzling out and really only being held together by stubborn GenZ who would rather be homeless than work on-site, so exploit it for as long as you can. There are a lot of people ruining WFH because they see it as a reason to slack off and do nothing, but I see it as a way to make even MORE money because i'm not chained to an office desk. Even if you're not looking for a W-2 Job, WFH allows you do do other side-hustle chit to make money.

That hasn't been a thing since they got rid of pensions and created "at-will" employment. Why be loyal to a company that doesn't give two-chits about you? You get in, work there long enough to add the skills to your resume and move on to the next job. Another perk to this strategy is you're all but guaranteed to get paid more at your new job then just staying at your old one.

Is this healthy for the US work force? Nope, but they created it, so its not our (the workers) fault.

the thing with the office is that you genuinely have to like (or at least find interesting) the work that you do, otherwise it's a slow death.

Beginning of the year I'll have to start doing 3x/week now. I'm sort of ambivalent about it. In some regards it sucks (there's a lot of little perks/benefits to staying home), but there also are some aspects of going in that I kind of like. I don't live that far from work either.

The majority of people aren't psychologically suited to working from home. It's neither an insult or a compliment; it just is what it is.

We specifically select for it and it's about 1 in 6 that are suited to it.

Like everything else, play to your strengths. If you are a round peg, don't try and force yourself in to a square hole.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......

My first IT job was WFH. I had my PC and phone, and next to that I had my gaming PC with a 32" TV. I'd be playing Dark Souls 3 while taking calls. During boss fights I would put the customers on hold while "I did some research into this issue". It was pretty great, but it didn't pay all that well.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.
