Best "checkmate" you've ever seen in office politics?

I hate the game but I have to play (for another 5 years). It's like god damn Game of Thrones in my office.

One time I took a dump in the handicap stall and clogged the toilet. As I was walking out of the bathroom, I greeted one of my coworkers. I watched him proceed to walk into the stall i just left with floating turds in the bowl

You have to stop caring man.

You win by letting them defeat themselves.

You are in charge of you and your actions. Turn everything else off.

It is a super power, and you will “win”.

The only way to win is to not participate. Let your work speak for itself.

Bro, did you actually say “Let your work speak for itself?”

It’s common office politics to take credit for someone’s work.

Girls are far better at office politics in my opinion. They’ve been practicing reputation damage and ambiguous deniability since high school, plus with the leeway given to them as oppressed office workers, they are given free reign and a victim card to use whenever they want.

People are always going to do that but like I said, you are in charge of you. You cannot stop that other stuff from happening.

It is almost always transparent as fugg but more than anything, it does not matter.

Focus on your work, turn everything else off. It only hurts you to pay attention to it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work this way. Your work alone will not speak for itself unless it's surfaced in some way.

If the culture is toxic enough that it's games all the way up, the best thing to do is leave.

Bruh, this is some boomer talk.

Either you make the office politics transparent, or you fight back with your own office politics or you leave to another job for office politics elsewhere (defeat). If you stay and do nothing, that’s cucked defeat.

Lol, ye there's a very idealistic view of capitalism that some people have. It's propagandized well.

There are massive, massive inefficiencies due to human behavior and incentive structures.

I learned this through personal experience and lots of corporate experience.

And I'm not making any claims on there being a better system before someone gets triggered and calls me a communist.

You can’t be defeated in a game you are not playing.

Instead, you're just being exploited while others are profiting off your hard work and productivity.

Dunno if this counts but for a few decades I spent all my time in the office using the fast internet connection to study, download and print reading materials and get undergrad, grad and professional year degrees when I should have been working

But because I was always at the office it looked like I was working harder than anyone

Also did the same thing when starting up my business lol

That's literally professional development and I think it's perfectly fine to do it on the job. I got my grad degree the same way. Most of my studies in one way or another benefitted my employer, so I have no guilt or remorse.

When our old director was studying for her PhD she would leave her computer on, jacket on the chair, couple of open notebooks and textbooks so it looked like she just stepped out to use the loo. She would be home sleeping lol.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

i) leave
ii) set up in competition
iii) steal their clients
iv) watch their company fold

I have a really good one.

A guy equal to my position moved to another branch where the CEO was based and ended up really moving upward because of that.

This guy is so stupid. Like really dumb. He types out in emails that something "makes since" like...he thinks that's the phrase as opposed to making sense.

He cannot solve problems, identify problems, generate ideas, fund holes that need ideas, think proactively, consider pros/cons, weigh different options

But...

He's AMAZING at 3 things:

1.) Doing what he's told
2.) Agreeing with everything the CEO says even if he doesn't understand the words he is parroting
3.) Placing blame on others and then firing them

So he did all that and he's up like 2 levels from me, right? Pissed me off because only I can see it. Everyone else treats him like the golden boy.

Ok well...his wife was not enjoying Texas. So, there was a rumor that they were considering moving back to my State's branch.

He and I spoke and I told him it would be a smart move (horrible advice)

Later an officer of the company asked if I wouldn't mind him moving back to my branch. I said no it'd be great! (It would suck, but I needed it to happen to get rid of him)

And so...he moved back.

And...since I knew his ways, I simply would clearly announce responsibilities for projects for everyone in my branch.

For me, it made it look like I was sharing the good deeds with my team. Humble as I am. And my company board members were happy to have the transparency.

BuuUUUuuuUuuttt....it made it impossible for this guy to blame others for his issues.

AaaaaAAAAAAaaand....without the CEO giving hum direct instructions after he moved away, he had no directions at all on what to do

So...he got let go.

I also want to say

For about the past 2 months I've been looking for another job to increase my salary

And I've gotten SUPER lazy at work, handing off a ton of my responsibilities. And my year end review was last week and I got a thumbs up for my management style of decentralized command, leadership, and delegation
