Bought 3 Boxing Glove Pairs For Testing. Will Report Back.

I’ve been going to a boxing gym 2-3x per week for the past 10 weeks.

I started sparring last week, and the coach asked if I’d be interested in an exhibition in February because I’m picking up on it so quick.

As a noob I had no idea the gloves I bought were more suited for sparring, but 99% of our classes are partnered mitt work. We do 4, 3 min rounds where we hold, and then switch to hitting for another 4 rounds. I like to unload during the last 30 seconds. As my gloves were more sparring and not so much bag work I tweaked my wrist.

I’m too old to play with my joints so I did some research and ordered 3 pairs from amazon. I’ll keep the best and return the other two.

Hayabusa T3 in 16oz
Rival RB11 in XL
Cleto Reyes training gloves in 16oz

They should arrive by Sunday. I will test them next week during my classes and report back for anyone interested.

I’m 6’3”, 220 for reference. This explains my 16oz gloves.

I have a Venum mouthpiece. Our sparring isn’t hard, just the nature of the gym. Some guys are hoping to make a career out of it so they’ll do hard sparring with each other. I don’t use a headpiece as it only protects the face, and not so much the brain.

I’m excited to see what these will do. I’ll probably stress test them by throwing bombs at the heavy bag for a few mins.

35 is ancient to begin. Google “boxers who started old” and you’ll find lists of people who were 19-22. I have zero ambitions to pursue this as more than a fun hobby and will only ever spar or at most do exhibitions.

Sorry for the late reply gay boys.

I’ve been to the gym 3x this week.

First pair I tested was Hayabusa T3. AMAZING wrist support. Very tight fit despite being 16oz. Some hand soreness, but that’ll get better with time.

Rival RB11. Very good wrist support. It I hadn’t tried the Hayabusas first I’d think these were the best. Not a good thumb position for me. Every heavy hook resulted in a tingle in my thumbs. Eventually thumbs felt numb.

Cleto Reyes. Didn’t even bother. Wrist felt floppy compared to others. It might be a good knuckle glove, but I’m mainly focused on wrist support. Plus these fukkers cost $245 and didn’t even include an advanced wrist support strap.

Went to a double class today and went with the Hayabusas again. For me these were the clear best. It honestly feels like a cast on your wrist. The hand position has gotten better, and the fit is very snug.

For some reference my wrists are twink mode at 7.5”. Hand circumference is 9” (google how to measure for boxing), and tip of middle finger ti wrist is 8.5”.

Maybe mentioned earlier that I’m 6’3” 220ish. Overall I’m a big time Hayabusa fanboy now. Absolutely no wrist pain when throwing bombs at the mitts or bag.

Different gloves for different guys mane. Cletos are super well known, but I tried them on and immediately felt the lack of wrist support.

Hayabusas are STIFF. But I’m a nerd and work in cyber security. I have to protect my wrists at all costs. I think the rivals are just as good IF you get the proper size. Maybe the XL was too big for me, but their chart is confusing.

Everyone else mentioned Cletos as being heavier than advertised. I’ve seen videos of claimed 14oz being actually 17-18oz.

I have very long arms as well. My wingspan is 76-77” despite being 75” tall. That might be why the busas work for me. It only takes a small part of my forearm.

Thank you for the reviews as I was in the same boat!

I already ordered and tried my hayubasas and love them. But I was curious about how other gloves compared—after reading your reviews I’m glad I went with my choice.

I haven’t spared yet because I have to get my medical done. Also have to return my head gear because I ordered a size too small

Glad I could help someone. Remember that when you spar your goal is to work on your technique and skill, and not to inflict damage on your sparring buddy. I’d be hesitant to spar with the T3’s honestly. They’re so dense. I kept my Venum Giant 3.0’s for sparring reasons.

As a side note. If ANYONE EVER WANTS TO SPAR YOU WITH CLETO REYES stay away. That glove is damn near black hole levels of dense. It’s a great bag and mitt glove if you vibe with the feel, but it’s straight up disrespectful to spar with that glove.

I’m still a big fan of Rivals RB gloves, IF your wrists are better or younger. The pop on those is super satisfying. Rival has a sparring line of RV. It’s a big investment to have a pair of bag gloves, a pair of sparring gloves, and a pair of punching mitts, but all of that is cheaper than wrist surgery.

Yes! It’s much appreciated!!!! Especially for someone who enjoys the sport too, your perspective and descriptions are very helpful.

Mmmhmm, I don’t try to only focus on power and damage. My coach lets me get into the ring to do offence while the other defends until I have my medical.

So in my head I’m always thinking about what I need to do. Ring control. Footwork/moving, angles/pivots. Pressure and range. Rhythm. I try to think about combos and how to set up an opening/feints. Where I might see weakness and where/when someone drops their guard as a habit. Working levels.

I need to work on my defence but that will be hard to do until I actually start to spar with someone.


lol someone does use cletos. He’s won 2/2 amateur fights now and I think is working on his third. I’ll try to be careful but that’s a part of it guess! I’m more worried about the young girl—she’s not as technical/strategic and is more focused on being aggressive/brawling. She will have trouble controlling herself/holding back.

I read your thread a few weeks ago regarding buying gear. It’s great to see some one else getting into boxing seriously. I say seriously with the caveat that we aren’t trying to go pro (for various reasons).

Cleto makes sparring gloves I think. I could easily be wrong. Mine feel so hard though. They’re going back.

I thought about getting the Hayabusa T3 LX, but it’s the same glove internally. I’d rather have the thumb that serves to wipe sweat.

What size did you get? If you don’t mind me asking what size are you? My wife is starting boxing soon, and my coach recommended 12oz max for her.

While on topic. I bought Rival RPM11 mitts in October. The stitches ripped today during training. Pretty chit for a $91 pair of mitts. Amazon agreed to refund me, so no big loss.

I ordered Hayabusa PS mitts instead. I’ll get them Monday. Will report back then.
