Recommend me a decent modem that won't break the bank
Needs to be compatible with COX cable internet. The modem they supply is absolute fking garbage tier as far as the wifi signal. It's so weak that devices as little as 20-30 feet away have poor signal strength.
Not sure if I should look into a router or just give them their hunk of chit modem back, take the $15 discount for not using it, and buy my own modem with wifi built in.

I feel like my house isn't nearly big enough to need a mesh system. It's like 1300sq/ft. Any decent modem should provide a strong enough signal anywhere in my house.

You probably don't need a modem, you need a better router. Buy any wifi 6e router and connect it to one of the four lan ports on your modem/router combo, then turn off the internal wifi on your modem.

I'm not sure wtf a modem vs a router is ... But I'd definitely get an upgrade from whatever the stock one the ISp provides since they're pretty generic / cheap ones. I'd trust whatever that nerd freeburn says.
