‘Stop the price-gouging’: Biden hits corporations over high consumer costs

President Joe Biden took aim at corporations Monday for charging prices he said were artificially high even though the rate of inflation has slowed and some shipping costs have fallen.

“Any corporation that has not brought their prices back down, even as inflation has come down, even as the supply chains have been rebuilt, it’s time to stop the price-gouging,” Biden said at the launch of a new White House supply chain initiative. “Give the American consumer a break.”

politicians are great at ignoring the things they can do something about in order to blame the things they can't do something about. if you were to rank the problems, corporate price gouging probably makes the top 10 but isn't the most significant. until the cost of housing is addressed through legislation that prevents banks/private investment companies from buying up family homes there shouldn't even be consideration for a second thing to look at.

It isn't so simple as blame everything on Biden or corporations. During Covid some companies did collude with each other to raise prices (very anti free market). They didn't need to raise prices for their industry but since everyone else who had to was doing it, they did too. That's something the FTC should have been actively investigating awhile ago. But realistically all Biden or anyone else should expect now that input prices have calmed is for prices to simply not keep going up. If expecting a company that sells consumer goods to drop prices just because supply chains are back to normal that's fanciful thinking. If dropping prices means a lot more purchases and more revenue they'll do so, but it's also crazy to expect companies to drop prices to "be nice." It's also foolish to think that oil prices coming down means prices will come down immediately afterward. That's not how things work, and for good reason.

"Our cost to make this ice cream was $3 in January 2023, now it's $2.50. Hey, let's lower our selling price by 50 cents so we're making the exact same profit as before" said no one ever, from small to large businesses. If and when prices do decline it will be for competitive advantage, not because it's a nice thing to do. If nothing else the public simply needs to be made aware that there's no reason for prices to keep going up, so don't buy stuff they feel is overpriced. If they don't buy prices have to come down.

Prices are definitely coming down on some things: used cars are down like 5% from a year ago, eggs of course (though that was avian flu), electronics are likely to have lowered prices since demand is depressed, etc. At the same time economists, including those at the Federal Reserve freak the fuk out about the prospect of deflation and the prospect of that causing a recession.


Cliffs: expect disinflation, relatively flat prices, not for prices on many things to go down, unless it's an industry with demand way down.

It's a combination. Other countries also panicked and got their money printers going. And the US dollar has such a strong effect on the world at large that a flood of USD directly causes spikes in other countries. Either one of those 2 factors by themselves would cause inflation in developed countries, both of them happening at the same time = large inflation. The US spending Trillions extra all at once is partly to blame for inflation in other countries, but it's not the only factor. And it's not like supply chain problems affected only the US. If someone says the US caused all or none of the inflation in other countries, they're simply ignorant on the topic.
