M&P 22 AR vs 5.56 PSA AR 15 for plinking?

Looking to buy a rifle simply for shooting targets.

Stuck between a 22LR & 223/5.56, the pro of the 22LR obv being you can buy a 1,600 round bucket of ammo for $125, but the 223/5.56 is more fun to shoot, but for the same money you get a fraction of the ammo

M&P 22, I have been shooting one for over 10 years and its relatively cheap and even more reliable than even the Ruger 10-22. It's also one of the most accurate guns I have ever shot under 150 yards.

There's accuracy and precision to consider. Both are different things.

For just plinking naw, but you can add a cheap red dot. I have no issue cowitnessing with the polymer irons. And the CMMG 22lr kit is WAY less accurate if that matters to you.

Always go 5.56/223 and leave the 22 for SHTF purposes. 22 is basically shooting a BB or pellet gun, which I personally dont find fun.

It depends on the range you'll be shooting at, IMO. Inside of 50 yards, just shoot a 22 LR. Beyond that, go for the 223.

If he's just plinking, then he's working on accuracy, and not precision.

In that case, it depends on the distance he's going to be shooting at. 556 will be more accurate further out. but expensive as chiiiiiit

Depends how much you want to clean your .22 ar. .22 is rimfire and burns a lot dirty than a center-fire 5.56. I'd rather use a Ruger 10/22 as a plinking gun personally. Pretty easy to clean and takes a little more abuse than an AR platform

PSA and S&W are similar quality. It comes down to the ammunition you want to use.

Personally, I would go with a .223/5.56 AR platform first. It has more applications, including hunting small and medium animals, self/home protection, and target, and are usually easier to outfit with accessories if needed.

I definitely like the idea of just getting a conversion kit, but a Ruger 10-22 is a lot of fun as well.

It surpresses so well, it’s so accurate out of the box, I typically shoot the Norma 1100 fps, big box 223 is such ****, I don’t have time for hand loads like I used to.

I only recommend children start with a 22.. if he's a first time shooter and starts with 22 he's gonna have a harder learning curve than starting with at least an AR9 or AR15 platform.

If he's in the right state he can also get a suppressor and/or subsonic rounds.

I said start with a 22.. Read what I'm writing.

That's like saying a BB gun suppresses better than a 22.. point is that if he starts with a 22 then moves to an AR15 theres gonna be more of a shock versus the other way around.

nothing wrong with starting adults on the basic fundamentals of firearm safety and rifle marksmanship than with a .22

you get to focus o nthe 5 fundamentals of shooting as opposed to being fearful of the recoil
