Make Your Own Beard Oil
I am growing out my beard again, and thought I’d share the basics of making your own beard oil. You can make it for about half the price of the oils on the market, maybe even less expensive depending on the essential oils you choose. A bottle of beard oil goes for $20-40 these days. Making it yourself you can get that price down to about $5-10 and it’s top quality stuff. Some of the essential oils can get expensive, but each bottle makes a lot.
The two best oils to use as a base are jojoba and argan oil. Jojoba is a relatively inexpensive oil and does quite well on its own. It’s generally found in the ethnic section of the health and beauty section, because it’s most commonly used by black folk to keep their hair from drying out, but it’s a staple in beard oils. Argan is great, but sometimes it only comes in a larger container and may get pricey, which could balance out if you plan to have a beard for a long time. Grape seed oil can also be used, but I don’t recommend making the mixture more than 25% grape seed.
For essential oils, the two that I find to be the best for your beard and skin are tea tree and eucalyptus. You can use pretty much whatever you want, but check them out first, and be careful what you use. Some of them can dry out your beard and skin, and a lot of them can do that simply by using too much. Add in the essential oil(s) by the drop and then give it a smell test. It should be subtle, not strong.
Before mixing up an entire batch, it might be good to also spot test the ingredients to make sure you don’t have any sensitivity, but these ingredients are pretty mild and safe.
Hope this is helpful to y’all.
