Dirt bikes

Anyone here ride? Looking to get into it with a used 125 or 250. Thinking of sticking with 2 stroke because I heard it’s easier to work on (I have zero experience nor do any of my friends or family ride).

Winter seems like a good time to get a deal. Would a 125 be too underpowered for me? 5’10, 180lbs and I’ll mostly be running on trails in the Midwest (very flat).

LOL at thinking you can get anything worth riding for anything even close to that. Look in your local area and see if they have any older bikes for cheap if your a beginner. Bikes arent cheap at all.your gonna pay close to $2000 just for a decent 250 to play with.Im looking for a bike myself and i think im just gonna get a new one for $4000 cause i cant find chit

125 is for riders like 14yrs and younger.

my ktm 125 is still more than I need, I've had it since I was 13

2 stroke is more fun, but a 4 stroke is just easier

250 4stroke is a good machine for trail riding and having fun, 2 stroke ain't gonna be fun for you if you're learning. don't kid yourself you aren't badass or hardcore if you have zero experience on a bike

Forget the 2 stroke unless your all about the track. 4 strokes are much less maintenance. If you're just trail/dual sport check out the Yamaha XT 250. Basically the go-to bike for beginning. Insanely reliable and capable on trails. They also have the lowest ride height so you will always be able to touch the ground with your feet, which is important when youre starting out. They've been around since the 80s. It's the only bike I'll ever own and I have two of them. Also dual sport so you can ride it one the street, but tops out around 55mph.

The 300 class euro 2 strokes are the best woods bikes by far. All the guys that win Erzberg and Romaniacs are always on 300 2 strokes.

Tree fitty is a meme. I’ve been browsing sites as well as local ads so I know it’s not that cheap.

What I find silly is a lot of these sites want damn near msrp for used bikes. Might as well pay an extra 2k and get it new.

I use to bmx (both riding dirt and park) but it’s been a while. Nothing motorized which is why I wanna limit it to a 250. Imma be the slowest one on any trail but just looking for a toy to have fun with.

I'd love me one of them Sur Ron bikes that everyone has now. Would be HNNNNG to cruise around the desert in peaceful silence.

Edit: I've actually known two motorcycle people who swear to God that an ebike is the best purchase they've ever made. The one guy would drive a Ducati at a closed track, loved his mountain ebike. The other guy owned razors/dirt bikes/jeeps/etc and said the ebike is by far his favorite toy.

I used to ride BMX and have been mountain biking for 13 years now.

Right now is the absolute best (cheapest) time in the history of the sport to pick something up. You can literally start tomorrow for under $500.

really depends how mechanically inclined you are. 2 strokes will require more upkeep, mixing gas, etc, cheaper but more frequent rebuilds, while 4 strokes will be lower maintenance but more expensive rebuilds. a 4 stroke will also have more manageable power, while a 2 stroke will be extremely torquey. not a huge deal on flat trails but something to consider.

I would advise getting at least a 250, but possible a 300 or 450 if you're gonna be doing trail riding. 125 might be too small/underpowered for your size/weight.

There's a lot of bikes that are better in woods than a cheap XT 250. But for a beginner that doesnt want to be rebuilding top ends and mixing oil? XT 250 is perfect. And I'll never own a 2 stroke again. Too much maintenace when im jist a casual dual sport guy. Anyone thats more serious isnt going to be asking for advice on here.

Yeah I’ve considered it quite a bit but really wanna motor this time lol. Even watched a ton of that guys videos. I spend far too much time on normal bikes. Idk something about having a motor I wanna try it.

Plan is in the next 5 years to move to Vegas or AZ to escape MN state taxes and those places seem more cool for both mtn and dirk biking than here.

Dunno about CA, but in AZ.. can ride out of my garage right onto trails. No trailering needed. So much open desert.

Just pick a 250 4-stroke on the cheap, and call it a day.

Such an absurd amount of trails out here. Also consider Utah, or Colorado.... Or even NM if you don't mind living around the poorest people in the USA.

good breakdown makes sense. Not mechanically inclined but I want to learn. I built my entire garage without any experience (all electrical too) so don’t see why I can’t learn mechanical stuff.

I notice that 4 stroke is also more expensive entry but that’s not a big deal for me right now.
