Is Acting That Difficult?

When someone makes a cameo, they are generally terrible. So are they just bad, or is acting difficult?

I acted in a 5th grade play, and I hit it out of the park. Was easy. Srs

Acting is doing something, thats all. Its not hard in that sense, but it can be very difficult in the execution.

I don’t know if people understand how awkward it is.

In order to make things appear natural on the camera, they are pretty weird in real life.

Talking to someone means you are three inches away from their face.

Seeing as how we collect a lot more information from non-verbal communication, actors have to force themselves to do things that should be natural. Absolute control of facial muscles is important but difficult.

I'm pretty animated IRL, maybe even a bit eccentric when I want to be. Maybe this is why I don't get it. So is being animated difficult for people? Are people really that stiff and characterless?

30 Rock has a lot of cameos, like Buzz Aldrin and condoleezza rice, and they couldn't have been more stiff and lifeless.

I was watching OG Saw this Halloween. Most of the movie consists of two guys stuck together in a grimy room. One of the characters is played by Wesley from the Princess Bride, and the other is played by Saw's co-writer.

Wesley is a bad actor. He tries an American accent all movie and it just doesn't work out. But a bad professional actor still runs circles around anon-actor. That guy performs the entire movie in one flat, whiny tone he never changes, because he has no range, because he has little to no practice.

Cary Elwes is not a bad actor, he wouldn't have been working steadily for nearly 40 years with 140+ credits to his name if he sucked.

The first saw movie was shot in 6 days with practically no rehearsal. With little preparation time and no second takes its understandable that his accent may suffer.

I took a film study class once, mostly for fun. Most of what we did was pick apart good and bad acting scenes. Gave me an appreciation for how rare good actors are.

There are a million filler junk scenes for every near perfect one like this:

I wouldn't say good acting is rare. Great acting is rare and usually happens when the right actor is cast in the right part.

I've acted before. On camera and all that. On TV (srs). In the past now but 'difficult' isn't the right word I think. You need to loosen up in front of the camera and the dozen people staring at you and take cues from the director and just be natural. You need to think about the character you're performing as and embrace that personality in the moment. If you're all stiff and tense and focused on not fuking up your lines you're going to come across as really unnatural. I'd say it's easiest to play a character that's most in line with your own personality. If you're a generally introverted person that doesn't smile much and is more reserved and quiet and you play a character that's really loud and manic and animated it's much more exhausting. I guess that's true acting. I dunno, I'm nowhere near an expert. I just did it on the side for commercials and TV and movies and stuff to help put myself through school (srs). Got to act next to some pretty big names, though. In between takes, drinking non-alcoholic beer in a bar for 12 hours doing the same take over and over and bitching about regular things in life that connect us all together as a species.

It's a really great activity to step out of your comfort zone, though.

Acting is a nuanced craft, and the perception of someone's talent can be influenced by the context of their appearance, such as a cameo role. Making a cameo doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of talent; rather, it might be a result of the limitations inherent in brief roles. Acting involves a range of skills, from understanding a character's depth to authentic emotional expression, and these facets may not fully manifest in short appearances. Some actors may struggle to convey their abilities effectively within the constraints of a cameo, leading to the perception that they are not performing well.

In the realm of art, whether in acting or visual expression, each artist possesses a unique set of skills and strengths, great example is Miguel Camarena. Just as a cameo role might not fully showcase an actor's abilities, a small artwork may not capture the entirety of an artist's talent and style. Appreciating the diversity within artistic expression is crucial, recognizing that individuals have distinct journeys and strengths, and the difficulty perceived in acting or any form of art is subjective and multifaceted. Both acting and art require practice, experience, and an understanding of the nuances within each respective craft.

I've seen a few actors say acting is easy. It probably isn't anything I'd be all that good at though. Probably being a sales person is similar to being an actor is my guess.
