Why do people lie on the internet?

Let's say I lied on here about my income, net worth, height, or how much I lifted.

Then someone complimented me (which I guess is the goal?). The compliment wouldn't even register with me, since it's directed at my false persona.

So, why lie? It makes even less sense than lying IRL.

I think it's more like selection bias. As an example, if someone is making minimum wage, why would they go into a salary thread and post that they make minimum wage? Only the moggers would go in there. And yeah some people lie, but most aren't. Look at Ibby. Or maybe he is CEO 10k a day and he's lying about making a massive $12/h.

I think or at least it's the impression I got that OP was referring to fast food workers coming on saying they are engineers or attorneys and or make 200k a year and drive a Mercedes and say how they have all these dates and banged all these chips when they never have had a date and probably only can bang hookers..
