Grandparents have been dead for about 8 years (cleaning out their house)/(dear diary)

All the chit that was important to them means nothing. My grandfathers study that we weren't allowed into as kids, Is now just a room. I was in there today boxing things up and the only special thing in there were some jewlery, his dogtags his guns and a cigar humidor, and just a bunch of books.

-looking deep into their documents, I found my grandmothers RN license certification from 1955, My Grandfathers HS diploma, old letters from friends my grandfather use to know when he served in the war (who are also long dead). Random photos of chit that was once sentimental to them like vacation photos and pictures of their first car, bank statements and old drivers licenses. My grandmother on the other hand has a bunch of fancy china-ware in the kitchen that we never got to use because it was only for "special occasions," overpriced dresses and hats and shoes, chit that was once considered "classy and fancy" back in the 1970's and 80's...now its all practically garbage.

My dad wants to keep the documents jewlery and guns which is understandable, but everything else in the house, all the things they felt were so important ultimately mean nothing. I hardly care about the stuff, so all this crap is even less significant to the relatives to come after me.

It really puts things in perspective. You can't take it with you. I kinda feel like i'm having a semi-exetential crisis due to the fact that nothing really matters (not even other people). Nothing really matters, and it seems silly to care about such insignificant things (and those "things" happen to be everything). Whether its politics or trying to impress some girl or that one time you embarrassed yourself in front of friends, or saving up for a car or house or boat....Ive always kinda known this, but it didn't really hit me that hard until today.

feels pretty damn weird...

cliffs:
Nothing really matters. If you're afraid or embarrased to do something, just do it. Noone will care, and even if people DO care, their opinions ultimately mean very little. in the grand scheme of things.

They've been dead for 8 years, but my dad has been too sentimental about the place so he hasn't done anything with it. I haven't lived in town to help work on the place (until now), so noone's really lived in the house since they died. The only thing my dad did to the house is have the water turned off, and removed all the perishable food from fridges/cupboards.
