70% of Chinese live on less than $10/day

964 million of the people in China live off less than 2000 yuan per month, which is about $280 a month. Even if you do a purchasing parity comparison (since goods are cheaper) that's about $550 in purchasing power per month. For 70% of the population. China worked like crazy to have this data scrubbed from the internet. Get outside of their biggest downtowns, which is where all of their wealthiest people live and much of the country lives in squalor.

In his article for the business outlet Yicai, Li cited data from a 2021 research paper by the China Institute of Income Distribution at Beijing Normal University, which placed the number of people living on less than 2,000 yuan a month at 964 million, or nearly 70 percent of the population."

Better than most of Africa, South America, and the countries surrounding China except for Russia with is about the same.

That's overall, bottom 70% isn't going to be easy to compare.
