Any other miscer boomers ever try to eat low sodium?

chit is tough man. had high BP at my last checkup. they wanted me to try low sodium for a few weeks and see what happens.

your healthy low calories chipotle bowl? not healthy if you put one of their salsas on it.

my healthy publix salad I used to eat for lunch a few days a week/ 1400mg sodium.

soups? high sodium.

seasonings? high sodium.

salad dressings? spaghetti sauce? high sodium.

chicken wings? not with a rub on them.

Mediterranean type diet is all you got. or have a steak, but no seasoning on it. or veggies or greens with no seasoning.

Not really a problem, if you limit processed food. If you make the salads, soups, pasta sources etc yourself, it's a different ballgame.

yep. the pasta itself is fine, its the sauces. so you have to make your own sauces basically (for everything). It was very eye opening to start looking at sodium content on things instead of just calories/protein.

This. I've been low sodium off and on for years and don't have much problem. After a while you find all the packaged chit execessive on the salt.

I like a bit of granulated garlic the best with a bit of salt.

Also stay clear of that salt substitute. Fuk that chit tastes nasty.

I'm not a big fan of Mrs Dash, at least the ones I've tried, but I think onion and garlic powder are good on a lot of things when limiting salt.

No judgment, but I've noticed the boomers I know, above every other generational group, have a tremendous amount of difficulty changing. My parents are like that, so are my other family members. Nutritionally, they'll continue jamming in schit that is slowly killing them despite their doctors providing them with the insight necessary to change. It's like they're so averse to stepping out of the comfort zone and taking chances.

It's good you're asking these questions, OP. You could modify your eating practices overall, like making more of your food yourself, and salting lightly. You know this but processed food is so filled with sodium that it really adds up. When I used to work schit jobs as a youngin' before I started lifting and changing my life, I'd bring these 'hungry man' frozen dinners to work. Holy flying schit balls brb entire day's worth of sodium in one little cardboard box. Ridiculous amount of fats as well.

Best of luck, OP.

You don't even have to go all the way back to basics. If, for example, you buy jars of passata, instead of pasta sauce, you get half of the convenience, without the added salt or chemicals.

yeah i had a heart incident and counted my insane amounts of sodium in my regular diet (some days were 9,000mg).
some meals had 3,000 mg so i had to change everything until i memorized numbers and foods.
a simple bagel had 300 mg.
the lowest item at nando peri peri for example was a sandwich with 1100 mg; it just became easier to avoid chinese, most fast food, most boxed fake food, and cook for myself.

you delete salt from the diet, period.

For real. I used to eat the velveeta Mac and cheese all the time and never paid attention to what was in it until I decided to try to lower my sodium. One box has like 2290 mg of sodium. Never again.

I'll have the odd processed/pre-packaged food like a can of tuna or some packets of oatmeal, but apart from that, I tend to make all my meals/snacks from scratch. I definitely feel a lot better knowing exactly what's entering my body.

Sodium doesn't cause high BP unless you keep yourself severely dehydrated every day, your are fat in the middle, or genetics (far more common in black people). Lose 15 pounds of bodyfat (20-25 pounds overall for most people) and unless you drink booze every day you'll have normal BP.

But who was nitric oxide? Ever tried eating piece of fruit for potassium?

The dietary changes made to lower sodium, e.g. cooking from scratch, also tend to result in weight loss, due to the lower consumption of processed sugars.

not necessarily low sodium per se..but i avoid excessive amounts of sodium as it makes my heart pound out of my chest

if you're actually eating clean, its almost impossible to overindulge with sodium. In fact, you will probably have to add a little salt to each meal

Reduce processed foods and for those you buy make sure they're low in sodium or naturally low in sodium. For example, if you buy bread that lasts for 2 weeks without spoiling then it has a lot of salt as well as preservatives. If you buy fresh bread that goes off after 3-4 days then it's lacking in preservatives and probably has a normal amount of salt. Or bake bread. I make my own salad dressings, I make my own pasta sauces (make a base and then freeze), I make most of my own bread. I make pretzels. When I make it, I can control the amount of salt and my blood work is much better.

Wasn't bad enough to put me on medication yet. But genetics wise yeah I am the only one in my immediate family NOT on BP meds so there is that lol.

Main thing is I used to cook every meal when I was married and got divorced and moved downtown in my city and started eating out all the time with all the new options.

Also need to reintroduce more cardio as I get into middle age.

So I know what's up and have a plan...just had never looked at sodium before and it was shocking.

How does one measure dehydration on a regular basis/daily?
