Makes me lol when people say BMI is crap

Yeah, maybe if you're a part of the extremely small percentage of the population that lifts to build muscle. If you're a part of the vast majority of sedentary humans, BMI is spot on.

When did the average Joe start thinking they were an outlier when it comes to BMI? I think the problem is when the average person is chubby, you being slightly less chubby makes you think you aren't still chubby.

it IS BS though.

Normal range for someone 5"10" is 130-170LB

Anywhere in that range is twink/concentration camp status.

if you weighed 130LB at 5"10" I'd think you were dying.

It's roughly accurate on a population basis, but there are problems with it. It doesn't, for example, take the distribution of fat into account either, so a slightly overweight person with the majority of fat on their legs and glutes gets lumped in with someone who carries most of the fat on their stomach, even though the latter is far more dangerous.

Waist to height ratio is way better.

No the fuk it isn't. I was around 140 at 5'9 graduating high school. I ran track for years, and fukked around with weights for a few months.

In basic, I ended up in the mid 150's. The weight I'm at now was a concentrated effort to gain weight over years.

A sedentary 5'9 man weighing 170lbs is going to be chunky when that shirt comes off.

Here's a sedentary 5'10 170 vs him after gaining muscle and losing fat at 165lbs over several years. Auschwitz wished they could have had this much mass.

They still have more fat than necessary. It's not an aesthetic calculator, it's a body mass one. Your heart doesn't care where the weight is. All it knows is it's gotta pump and support this weight.

I agree they both would have more fat than necessary, but studies have been done showing stomach fat is more dangerous because it tends to be visceral fat. That's how you can get people who are technically normal weight according to the BMI but have type 2. Waist to height ratio cuts through that.

Reading comprehension matters.

Did I not say unless you're a part of the EXTREMELY SMALL portion of the population that lifts to build muscle? Add increatine, and of course this skews the figures more.

For the sedentary population, which is the vast majority of the population, BMI is spot on.

Until we have a bodybuilder epidemic, BMI will matter.

BMI 100% is crap on an individual basis because people have different all kinds of body types. It's cool you were 5'9" 140 in high school. I was 5'9" 170 and was a wrestler who was sucked down to make weight, but I was overweight, even borderline obese, by BMI. That was a bunch of bullchit.

BMI is meant to be a tool to measure a whole population. If the average BMI of a whole population is in obese range or moves up or down in a given time by more than a certain amount, that could constitute a public health issue within that population. I hate that an individual BMI is applied in any way. It's not meaningful that way and was never intended to be used that way.

OP has a legit point, its an easy measurement that probably applies to most people, but people use it as cope.
brb I might be 300lbs but go to the gym and can bench 250 so it's clearly mostly muscle, or I'm just big boned

key point worth repeating again.

"Average Joe"
"start thinking they were an outlier when it comes to BMI?"

If you are not the average new lifter, then he isn't talking about you, simple.

The people that criticize BMI are typically 300 lb, 5'3" whales, trying to justify their disgusting lifestyle.

They should be ridiculed.

And let's not forget we have plastics in our water,10,000 chemicals in our food that Europe bans, hormone disrupters in our processed food, a bunch of chemicals in everything and our average Test number is 300 or almost 3 times less than your grandpa.

Not even close to fair.

I gained some muscle, sure, but I lost a hell of a lot more body fat sucking weight. I was almost cachectic looking, but I have shorter legs and broad shoulders, so I hold a lot of weight for my height regardless of what my body fat percentage is. On the other end, there are people who are tall and skinnyfat who don't even make a blip on BMI but are actually a lot fatter than I was at the time. It really shouldn't be used on an individual basis at all.

5'10, 169 lbs, 23.4 BMI crew. I have SOME muscle but not a lot. I currently have a gut (no ab definition), love handles, slight fat in the pecs, but rest of the body is mostly fat free. End of December I was 177 lbs, 25.4 BMI, and I felt sluggish and had it even worse. I have to get down to sub 160 levels to begin to see a little ab definition, rid myself of the love handles, and lose most puffiness in the pecs. At 159 I would be 22.8 BMI. So by and large I agree with what you're saying OP.

To be fair, they give a wide generous range in the BMI scale. For 5'10, normal weight is 126 - 174 lbs. Being too close to either extreme makes you look excessive in that direction. The midpoint, which is 150, is about perfect I think. For me at least, as someone who doesn't make weight lifting / bodybuilding his life, is natty, and skips leg day.

When I joined the army I was 30lbs over the height and weight limits (190lbs, I was 220) and BMI limits (28, I was 30), but I was under the body fat limit(18%) so I was able to join. I'm average in every way. I'm a great example of why BMI and height and weight are not the best metrics for body composition or overall health, (within logical limits of course, if you're 5'8 and 400lbs there's no way that's healthy even if it is all muscle).
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

These women were almost nonexistent when the chart was made. These aren't new genetics, it's just aesthetically favorable fat distribution.

Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you OP

At 5’9 1/2 I was competing at welterweight then later at middleweight, which was around 173 lbs IIRC

My breakfast was a glass of water and a 5km run

Literally hours of cardio just to make weight

Tbh it wasn’t the training that got me in the end, that part was enjoyable, it was the increasingly unhealthy habits that were required ti maintain the weight

According to BMI I would have been overweight though
