Miscer’s gaming monitor preferences
Do you prefer Oled , QD Oled , or old school lcd , commonly referred to as an LED monitor. Aspect ratio, and screen size ?
In b4 I should have a 42” on my desk .
This is driving me nuts , and I’m tired of reading review after review .
I seen some reviews on QD Oled , and some are complaining about eye fatigue,but no one knows why . One guy claimed he wore blue blockers and it never helped , so now there’s claims it might be some people’s sensitivity to the pulse width modulation used to dim the pixels .
I guess I won’t know till I buy one , and hopefully it’s returnable , so buying through Amazon may be a bad choice I’m assuming.
I mean there are some decent looking monitors that are still lcd tech also , but I’d prefer oled . I can’t find any WOled monitors now,as I think they’ve all been phased out in favour of QD Oled technology, which imo would emit more of that nasty blue light .
My computer guy recommends a 34” with a 21:9 aspect ratio , 1440 resolution and 144-165 hz refresh . What do you guys prefer size and aspect ratio wise for gaming ?
The computer I’m having built will have a 4090 gpu , so I should be able to get some decent fps . Just thought I’d mention this if it effects your monitor recommendations

Ok here’s one from LG that is standard Oled , no QD I think . But it’s a 27” , and not sure if that will be too small.

34" 1440p 21:9 = goat for immersion and all around. Really, the wider the better imo.32:9 is sick too, but alot more pixels. 3440x1440p is a perfect balance for quality and pushing performance even if you aren't rocking xx80 or xx90 series cards. I'd go for a 240hz though personally. But 144 is probably fine for most people.
I am still not going to daily drive an oled monitor. I don't care how good they look. My pc is left on alot and I like leaving thr screens on with wallpaper engine running. I am not going to use a monitor that I have to turn off the Taskbar and run a black background to avoid burn in.
However an oled as a side monitor is OK. I use my LG cx 65" as a side screen and just the black background and no Taskbar so it just looks, like it's off then when my pc goes to sleep it shuts off.
4k is pretty sick and a 4090 will obviously be great for it but idk, I just don't feel like it's worth the frame loss generally. But for productivity... 4k is sooooooo good. Editing on 4k is a treat. Honestly 4k is better at everything outside of gaming imo.
Personally right now I just have an Asus 27" 1440p 240hz ips as my main, an old acer predator 1440p 27" vertical on the side, and my LG cx 65" on a rolling tv stand off to the side a bit. My girlfriend uses my acer predator 34" 3440x1440p 100hz as her main monitor. I see no reason to upgrade anything for a while. 27" is small these days but it's the best size for 16:9 1440p.
If I were to buy one single juicer of a monitor to go with my brand new 4090 build I would go for one of the Samsung Neo g9 32:9 49" super ultra wide monitor.
Idk if you are just gaming the maybe you could get away with an oled but I work on my pc too and i can't be bothered trying to baby it for 5+ years.
K that's just like my opinion man as a dude who's gone thru many screens over the years.

Freeburn I agree as ideally I’d like two computers with different monitors , one set up for photoshop and one for gaming . You avoid burn in , and apparently there’s people claiming that they are finding text harder to read on oled monitors. Maybe due to the pixel layout ?
I think I’m going to quit procrastinating and buy an Alienware monitor . This looks pretty promising for gaming , and getting rave reviews on YouTube

27 inches is the sweet spot for desk gaming. I have a 32 and it's a bit too big.

3 monitor setup, 27", latest LG Ultra Gear or ASUS ROG variants.
Outside of that, for 2024 hardware and gaming I'd say 1440p 144hz as well. 1080p was the chit from 2005-2016 or so. Then GTX 10 series came out and 1440p began to be the most reasonable option. Fast forward to 2023's RTX 40 (and AMD's RX 7000) and 4K is playable and achievable with higher end rigs when using DLSS/FSR, but it still feels like we're at that limbo period of "reasonably moving on to a higher resolution" from a performance perspective. A lot of this is because NVIDIA keeps assigning their mid-range GPUs 12GB VRAM or less. RTX 50 might be what pushes 4K into being a reasonable decision globally at most budgets. With the exception of e-sports since people want those 300+ FPS rates.

So to sum it up I just ordered it . I think there’s a return policy if I don’t like it . Some reviewers claimed they had a lot of eye strain with Oled monitors. I hope all goes well .

It runs 1000nit HDR, just change it in the menu settings.
the 400nit HDR is TRUEBLACK which is not pretend 400HDR its the real deal and very close to 1000Nit HDR (some prefer it)

LED is just the back lights not the panel type. they can be IPS or VA.
I have a 32" VA gaming monitor and a 27" IPS secondary monitor for general use. honestly should have gotten IPS at the time instead of VA. both are 1440p and 16:9.
if you can afford oled that is the best
you can then decide if you want a curved ultra wide or a normal 16:19 aspect ect.
at work i have one of the ultra wides and then a secondary 16:9 screen. the ultra wide seems weird at first but you get used to it, i would get an ultrawide oled if i was getting a top end gaming monitor today.

I see professional gamers still use 24” 1080. The 24” makes sense , as the wider you get the more difficult it is peripheral wise .
If I could have found a 27” in a 21:9 aspect ratio I would have bought

Well I’m having a bit of trouble with ultra wides . I swapped in one of my old dell 24” U2410 monitors as a test . It has a weird aspect ratio of 10:16 , but I found it doesn’t bother my eyes as much . I put the ultra wide back in and immediately noticed my eyes felt strange with all that width .
Shame , as the 34 UW just looks sick imo . I feel as though maybe I should find a 27” alternative.
Going to be painful boxing the 34” up though . Maybe I should try Call of Duty first before making a judgement.
But imo Doom Eternal ain’t working for me , but I sure like the extra view the 34 provides, just find it weird on the eyes . I a”most wonder if it’s the curve , but it’s very slight at 1800
