Wtf @ alleged at-will employment

I will never understand this.
-Live in an at-will employment state
-Employer gives you a new employee handbook saying you are in at-will employment and can be terminated at anytime for any or no reason

-Go to work, the problem employees are obvious and the consensus among everyone else is clear on who the biggest chit is on the office
-Brb managers "I've had problems with them but well they haven't done anything I can fire them for.."

I will never understand it. Are they just pusillanimous or is there still some legal hang-up?

Sometimes if they are a protected class woman, gay, POC they are afraid of getting sued for wrongful termination

People are so low IQ when it comes to "at-will"
It just means they can fire you without reason and you can quit with no recourse
All big companies, in at-will states will not fire an employee for no reason
It is too risky because the employee can claim it is because of a protected reason
They will do three corrective actions (write up) to protect themselves

Nobody sees how contradictory it is? If they can fire for no reason yet they can't do it for legal risks. The employee signed up for at-will employment so that should negate any potential wrongful termination lawsuits, especially if they were noted for performance issues. Yet every at-will employer I've been with is hesitant to toss out bad apples

They can fire you for any reason except being a member of a protected class. Most big companies are risk averse and like to avoid lawsuits, even ones where they are likely to prevail. And frankly, they've got employees in HR who's entire job consists of writing these policies, so they're going to keep cranking them out to justify their existence.

I'm at a small company and we fire people all the time.

I was working on a joint project with another (huge) company and they had an employee that her co-workers referred to as "the canary" because she was so incompetent that they figured that, like a canary in a coal mine, in any layoff situation she would the first to go, but the fact was that she had already survived a couple of layoffs (she did eventually get it). Don't know if being an Asian female factored into her longevity, but it certainly couldn't have hurt.

Live and work in an At-will state......

The company I used to work for had several lawsuits against it from people who were rightfully and lawfully fired.....all documented infractions, even given more chances than the handbook stated.

1 example....guy was late 6 times in a month, was a no call/no show 2x and just decided he didn't want to finish out the day on a Friday so he left and didn't tell anybody......went through all the proper documentation, meetings with him, etc....was on a performance plan (dude should have been fired) ........less than a week into his performance plan period his supervisor finds him sleeping in his truck.......so we fired him.

2 months later company gets hit with a Lawsuit....guy says he was fired b/c he's black and the company is racist.

This.
I am at a at will state
I had a well paid employe that was a lib cuck
Well I do some renovation in one of my businesses and he posts online "*my name* can spend all this money on renovation but doesn't give me a raise".
Guy never asked for a raise and did not deserve on anyways
I fired him for that

I would not fire him for being a lib cuck

Also. females are over 50% of the country and somehow minorities lol
Careful hiring females

I hear you. It happen for variety of reasons actually.

One, firing is as much fun as shooting a dog.

Two, there are no better ones, they are all idiots but this is a bit less so.

Three, and I have seen this a lot, employee knows too much of internal cookings and can have you by your balls if termination of employment is not mutually agreed.

Four, employment agreement, which can have rather expensive separation penalties. It still is a fire at will, but expensive.

And the last one, some managers are actually pussies who can't do their job (fire/hire).

Sometimes companies have their own policies in place. Maybe this is one of the situations.

There is a big expense on businesses when they cycle through employees.
