Any reason (at all) to buy an Apple Vision Pro? SRS

Fairly certain we all know the dozens of negatives, and negative implications these devices (will continue to) have on society.

But what's the upshot supposed to be? Incels sitting by themselves on their couch, fapping to some kind of interactive porn?

I have a VR headset to play Beat Saber and Thrill of the Fight on. Doesn't look like this does that, so I can't see myself buying it.

This is like 2007 all over again with the first iPhone. This tech is going to be the new norm down the road. It will end up being more compact and convenient in the style of glasses. This is just the first gen. I’d wait a couple years before buying into it.

But what’s crazy is think about 2007 and the introduction of the first smart phone and where we are as a society because of it with social media and a constant 24/7 information cycle in our hands.

We’re welcoming our further demise with this technology and going to be plugging into the matrix. Imagine Elon musk neurolink synergizing with this technology. Everyone will be living in their own little worlds.

I’d love for a solar flare or emp to wipe all this out.

I think this tech gives people on-the-go more productivity and ability to perform essential tasks with limited space. Best example is something the YouTube vid mentioned... being on a flight and getting work done during it by solely having your hand in view of the sensor.

But outside of that, it's a net negative. Imagine a family of people wearing headsets and not really interacting with each other, less walking, promotes a sedentary lifestyle possibly. People will still desire the real authentic immersive experiences that we've had, over virtual sit at home with digital avatars and fake backgrounds crap.

Yeah this is what I am getting at really. I posted videos on the main Misc of folks on an NYC subway using it.

Look back to the images of folks glued to their phones. Is watching a Mr Beast video (Casey Neistat) while waiting for an NYC subway "progress"?

Seems like a race to the bottom to me. And folks wonder why Gen Z are socially maladjusted.

3500 is just way too much.

It doesn't game so it's focus is what? Workflow? Messing with dumb apps for a few minutes?

For 3500 I could just build a work capable pc and buy multiple 4k monitors and set up an immaculate workspace with a ton of usable desktop

If it was 1000 even I'd probably have bought ot just to **** around with it. But 3500 is insane.

If you really need to have an ar/vr work space, a quest 3 can do all the same desktop/work related type of stuff.

As far as the pictures and videos and other things, they are cool, but I'm not strapping on a vr headset to look at pics from vacation lmao. I watch most movies with my gf so it would be rare I'd sit around and actually watch stuff on the "big screen" in vr

It is really cool tech tho. The videos I've seen have been really impressive.

On the go, who? Those of us with drivers who take us to work and back? And you think what we want to do is strap that thing on our head while being driven around to be even more connected than the modern smartphone already makes us?

On a flight? Okay, I guess? Seems a bit niche though. And that's the point at the end of MKBHD's video: "If you have the money and want a really fun toy, it's your money, you do you. I'm waiting for subsequent gens [given the flaws, including FOV.]

Fun to mess around with.
Playing games.
Apples ecosystem is pretty phenomenal.
Using it as a private screen to use with a laptop.
Potential for more immersive sports watching.
Potential for apps to take advantage of it.
Increased work area/space.

There's just a handful, you don't have to watch it now.

I would happily trade my Oculus for the Vision.

That's the point in a sense. It does things you can already do with other means. The demos show someone setting up a workspace but then running a tv show on a tv behind him, having a music app open on the left, having text messages open as well in another app.

Whereas I can have whatsapp web, signal, outlook, teams etc. all open on my desktop and simply flick through them on an ultrawide. Do I really need to have goggles on to have a tv show running in the background?

It is cool tech in principle. But I think we're on the path towards cranial implants - where these things will be direct overlays over our field of vision. This is a major step in that direction - to inculcate the populace to being 'connected' at all times.

Baby steps.

I think within the next decade or so we will see apple vision pro type products shrunk down into eyeglasses and much less obtrusive looking wearables.

By 2040 you will not even know who's wearing ar/vr glasses because they will just look like normal Eyewear

It would be very useful for home theater if they actually allowed you to use your own audio equipment

setting up a movie theater in your house is a pain and can be prohibitively expensive to do it any justice. With this you can get a 40, 50, or even 60+ degree field of view at your fingertips which is incredibly immersive
The resolution and screen is excellent and the vision has a great movie mode

i would be interested in this on the next iteration after some more improvements

the screen appears to be 3660 x 3142 per eye and uses micro oled tech.

So you use it to make it easier to see the screen you're typing on? Rather than having the screen you're typing onnotbe the dominant image in your FOV? E.g., right now I'm typing this post and watching my secretary bend over. Just a quick, high test difference.

I mean the video I posted goes into a lot of detail, and the field of view is notably worse than at least one other option in the space. There are differences, including visual fidelity, battery life, the apps available...

Well, yeah. That's part of the price of the "Apple ecosystem" (as shareholders like to write online). I mean it is impressive - subsequent iterations with far better hardware and tech should be much better. Especially on the FOV side, I would hope.

probably too early to tell. the people buying it now are pretty much beta testers, and Apple will probably roll out the second hardware version of the device by the time it becomes really useful. look at the original iphone: it didn't get good until they implemented the app store and 3g. the apple watch is still a meh device unless you're into all kinds of fitness.

Gimmick atm but has potential in 10-15 years when it's actual glasses that connect to your iPhone (ala Apple Watch).

The real use is glasses for day to day, to see notifications, weather, identify objects around you, etc but even then is it really needed? I personally don't think so but Apple/tech companies will decide for us and you'll be an outsider if you don't own it (like a smartphone in 2024).

That being said, I saw some video of a guy playing fruit ninja on it. Spend $3500 to get bored of a game in 5min.. lol.

Every video I've seen I say to myself "I can do that on my iPhone/computer". It doesn't really solve a problem (yet), but I could see this being useful in a medical setting to identify diseases or help with surgeries.

My honest take on this device is how it screams "wait for later revisions." Guarantee the price will go down, the performance and design will only improve, and it will allow time for the worthwhile software to show up.

The thing is, do you welcome that with open arms? The integration of these things with brain function could have immense rewards, but the proper understanding of brain function is still a long way away.

Ever seen Black Mirror?

We're already part way there - 'clout' derived from how many IG followers you have, huge income advertising streams when the masses adore you. I can't see a future like that working, at all.

I get that, but the ski goggles issue mentioned in the MKBHD video would kill it for me. I agree that a future iteration that solves that - could give much more immersion. The demos I have seen, like - why would I wear that while I cook? Or walk around the streets of NYC? For totally immersive content, sure - just imagine how webcam slooting will take off.

I have a hard time believing these things will increase anyone's productivity. I can see them being useful for SWAT, first responders, or military to see through walls or something.

Any civilian pretending they are productive in these is going to look like a try hard moron.

I think Brett Weinstein Tweeted something about these people being functional schizophrenics. I had a good laugh after watching that NYC Cassie guy playing with butterflys while people stared at him.

Yeah, its mostly for developers at the moment.
