Just got a new PC. I had an ass of a time trying to fix my old one, which I assembled myself back in November 2020. It had an r9 5900x, RTX 3090 Gigabyte Eagle non-OC, Corsair 1000w Titanium PSU, Corsair h150i Pro, MSI tomahawk x570 mobo, 64gb ddr4 3600 mhz, Win11 Home, WD SN850 2TB. I used to get BSOD 4-10 times a day, usually for the DPC Watchdog error. Sometimes under heavy load the GPU would just shut off and remaining system components stayed on, requiring reboot. I even swapped out the PCI-e cables, and tried to reset the BIOS, reset the OS, etc. The OS would then continue to fail to reinstall.

Gave the phark up with it.

Went to Maingear (though I'm sure other brands are fine too) for a new PC. Specs are in sig.

Thought I'd share how it's going.

The GPU came as the 4080 SUPER Founders Edition. All parts inside are accurate. When selecting the parts, you can't choose the brand, so I'm happy it was the Founder's Edition by happenstance.

Downloaded Palworld, and even with DLSS off (native), with epic settings at 1440p, getting 144 FPS. I also get 144 FPS when DLSS is turned on. I presume I have a setting somewhere that caps me out at 144 FPS, despite setting "no limit to FPS" in the game itself. My monitor refresh rate is 144hz, so that's probably why.

Came with an RGB controller. Tested it and it works, can change the system internal and external RGBs with it.

So far, during Pal World, the GPU has not exceeded 66c, though did reach a 74c hot spot temperature. This is far away from the default GPU thermal limit of 83c. RAM temps have yet to exceed 52c. GPU has reached 2790 Mhz so far out of the box without any overclock. CPU has reached 5586 Mhz in the P-cores, 4289 Mhz in the E-cores.

CPU core temp maximum so far is 75c, but hovers currently with Palworld on in the lower 50s.

Fans from the system generate a slight hum during gameplay. Way quieter than the speakers.

Very satisfied. Zero issues so far but it's only the first day.











Next year, I plan to get another PC, likely through Maingear again tbh. It will be the Intel 15th/16th gen, and the RTX 50 series (probably 5080). I plan to give this computer I got today to my brother. I'm giving my old PC to an IT nerd I know who is willing to try to make it still work or otherwise use some of its components. After my new PC next year, I don't plan to buy another computer until probably 2030, srs.

Yeah I felt some shame in buying a pre-built, but if you put everything into PC Part Picker it's basically a $500 difference ($2500 vs $3000). Not TERRIBLE, but could've gotten me double the RAM and storage for the price difference.

I went with Maingear because GamersNexus anonymously tested one of their pre-builts and had almost nothing but positives to say about it.

Regarding my previous PC: The CPU, CPU cooler, RAM, are all fine. Potentially problems with the Mobo bios, storage device, PSU, and GPU. Mobo bios would lag out during OS reinstall. OS had the watchdog errors. GPU would suddenly turn off sometimes during heavy load even after PCI-e cable replacement, so could also be a PSU problem IDK.

I have 3x 2560x1440 144hz G-sync LG Ultragear monitors that I got back in 2020. I think I'll keep doing 1440p, and upgrade to 4k when I get the RTX 50 series next year. I reckon every game I play or buy in 2024 will have smooth 144 fps @ max 1440p. Maybe the same can happen with 4k with RTX 50 series. I know the 4080 / 4080 SUPER can't even get steady 144 FPS at 4k in a lot of games, sometimes only 50-90 FPS depending on the game.

EDIT: Here's a random sample YouTube benchmark of 4080 SUPER with 4k gaming. This was with an i9-13900k which has similar performance to my i7-14700k.

DLSS helps a lot but even with it a 4080 SUPER doesn't get steady 140+ or even 120+ in some demanding titles at 4k.

Put linux on your old one and see if you still get issues.

Random BSODs could be a bad PSU, or even bad driver install.

If vsync is on (in-game or in nvidia control panel) you will get capped fps. I run with vsync on in nvidia control panel, reflex on, full rgb 10 bit color, gsync on, basically following these settings

AM4 was all that was out at the time. AM5 came out in 2022, I built my old rig in 2020. But I agree it'd be cheaper to just replace the motherboard (and way more annoying).

EDIT: If we wanna talk about finances, I felt an upgrade was worthy of pulling the trigger for me. Got $100k liquid currently even after buying that computer, made over $20k YTD from stocks not including my job, getting a hefty bonus from work soon, 3 paychecks in March, etc etc.

In hindsight I could've done more to fix my old PC, but it would've required hours of work, winevent log reviews, Googling, swapping cables, swapping parts (perhaps even the motherboard... phark that sucks).

Would rather let an IT homie I know, who doesn't have a lot of money, have something special. They've never had anything better than a GTX 1080 lol.

Should look into getting that upgrade with dem stacks tho. 5900 is no slouch, but at this point seems like going to AM5 seems like the best bet. I'm waiting to hop on once the rtx 5 series are out.
