Why do men make this pose? Is it an evolutionary custom? Common courtesy to cover your dink?

My guess is it has to do with the same reason people never smiled in older pictures.

Pictures used to take a long time to take so people had to hold poses that were sustainable.

I honestly don't see that too often. Jokingly, I'd say hiding your peanut peen. Realistically, probably their way of standing more formally or trying to seem more classy.
