wtf my brother out of nowhere is now in ICU with necrotising fasciitis

my parents ate lunch with him and his 3 kids on Sunday, he was perfectly fine. last night he had insane pain in a cut he's had for a couple weeks. Went to the hospital this morning, and now he's on a respirator in a compression chamber in ICU awaiting surgery tonight.

having serious issues processing this. any prayers appreciated.

Ya it's a crazy thing for sure. Type 1 and type 2 nec fasc are common microorganisms that we all have on our skin and cause no harm. Every once it w while it just wrecks somebody.

I'm surprised they are waiting for surgery as it's very time sensitive to remove and hyperbaric treatment isn't that useful. If he's young and healthy then he will survive but may lose a large portion of the muscle on that limb or possibly the whole limb. That would suck but step back for a second and have some perspective, many people have way worse medical events.

The positive with the common bugs that usually cause this are that antibiotics will crush any systemic infection even if he becomes septic and requires a lot of support for a few days. Good luck to your brother man these things usually pan out decently in the end.

BTW, something similar happened to my grandmother. She spent a week in a coma and lost a leg. SRS.

Nec Fasc is extremely fast and a real medical emergency. This is one of those conditions that more people need to be aware of to make sure they seek medical attention immediately. For anyone that doesn’t know what it is, I highly recommend that you check out some info on it. It is life threatening. Unfortunately it gets missed by non emergency trained physicians in the early stages.

Not me but this is someone who had a deep cut and only used cayenne pepper directly on the wound with band aid and is almost healed with no issues after 2 weeks.

Just to give you hope, had a client who had it when she was 16 and lost the back half of most of her leg (ie hamstring and calf). She had a rough time but came through and was still able to do pretty much everything. Hope he gets well taken care of.

A Flesh Eating Bug-it was the big thing 20 odd years back with the media. Pretty rare bacterial infection people get usually from cuts/wounds, insect bites etc. Usually when they are severe incursions & the person hasn't got proper medical care for it, or ignored it.
