Why were Billy & Charlie so reluctant to tell Ace about spotting Ray Brower's body?

I know they didn't want the cops to know that they had boosted that goddamn Dodge, but I never understood why they would want to keep it from Ace. And Billy & Charlie manage to keep their enormous secret for about thirty-six hours, a personal record for both of them. By noon, Ace & Eyeball had told the secret to everyone in the gang, but nothing negative resulted for Billy & Charlie. So what were they so worried about?

Did they think Ace would've been mad at them over this? Or you just think they feared him because he could be a bit unpredictable at times? The thing is, they still didn't want to ride out there with Ace after the whole gang found out about it. Ace loaded up the fishing gear, and said they'd tell the cops they were just out there taking a few steelhead out the river and found the body. Billy & Charlie still didn't want to go with him though. Their persistent reluctance really baffles me.

I always liked how Charlie saw Vern at the site of the body and instantly knew he was under the porch, digging for pennies, listening in on the conversation he had several days earlier with Billy. Called him a "keyhole-peeping bum."

My buddy was inspired to play mailbox baseball from the passenger side of my jeep after watching that movie

I still feel bad about it 15 years later srs

But to answer your question I think it was the boosted dodge that made them so hesitant to tell anyone. Plus, maybe the police would think their gang had something to do with the kids death because the fishing excuse seems like it might have been out of character

Geeze. How many mailboxes did he take out? I'd be pissed if I saw him doing that to my box.

Its my all-time favorite movie, but there are still some things about it I don't really understand. Like how Ray Brower got hit by a train. How did he not see it coming? Was he trying to dodge it like Teddy? I've seen the theory floated around that he may have been deaf. But you'd think he still would've felt the vibration, right? May make for a good prequel. The Story of Ray Brower.

Only one. And I didn’t know he was going to do it.

We had just gone bowling and his ball cracked. On the way back home he rolled the window down and grabbed his cracked ball and chucked it out the window. It spilt in two after completely destroying the mailbox.
