Tekken 8 with the ol' bait and switch

Release game, reviews well

3 weeks after all the good reviews, add a shop with microtransactions

Yeah yeah you don't have to buy. I think this is a new thing we will see more games do to avoid having initial reviews effected by microtransactions.

Release the game then just add them later on after the review process. Ez

Fighting games are largely a scam anyway.

Wait for the game to be 3 years old and just buy it with all the dlc for $20.

One thing I never got with them is that the games are so similar, why even get the newest release?

MP games are all about timing. Fomo is real.

No one wants to get into a multiplayer game 3 years later when half the community has moved on and all that's left is the hardcore players who never stopped playing.

MP games are at their peak when they launch and the community is massive and filled with people of all skill levels

Doesn't this happen with literally every fighting game that comes out? There is always a "complete" or "ultimate" edition that comes out a year or so later that includes the dlc. This is why you shouldn't buy "AAA" games on day 1.

Ehhhh idk I mean I'm not up on my fighting games too much since umvc3

But I think it's more so about the dirty dirtness of adding the store post reviews. They knew having a microtransaction shop would effect how their game reviewed, so they obviously waited on purpose for the initial wave of public reception.

Kind of a scummy move

How would a micro transaction shop hurt reviews?

... You don't see how having a micro shop, in a 70 dollar game, with characters locked behind dlc pay walls... Might not be received or reviewed well?

As much as I hate microtransactions, I love Tekken 8. I'm down for more customization options and I'll pay for my favorite characters.

I think there's a balancing act. Some microtransactions are ok. Sports games and Pay 2 win microtransactions are terrible.

This, if you don't want to pay for it, then don't. No one's forcing you. The only time when this is absolutely egregious is when game content is hidden behind paywalls where you are forced to pay additional $ to access some hidden content or game mode. This is just microtransactions for character customizations.

For additional characters, the developers are putting in a lot of time to add that character, which takes a lot of work to implement because you have to balance the characters with the other 40+ on the roster. So, If I want that character, I will gladly pay extra $ for it. If you want extra food at a restaurant, you pay for it.

Nah, I'm buying AAA if it's from a proven developer and trusted reviewers say it's good. It's no hard at all to know whether a game is good or bad. Over a span of 5 years, Cyberpunk 2077 is the only AAA game that I 'probably' shouldn't have bought Day 1. I say probably because I had no problems playing it on my PS5.

If you've been burned preordering AAA you should've done more research. Avoid Ubisoft, EA, Activision, sports games and 90% of the problems go away.

I mean I understand where they're coming from. Microtransactions to buy custom items is 100% ok in my book. The problem occurs when it's strong pay 2 win characters behind DLC. I still wouldn't be able to help myself from buying Lei Wulong and Anna Williams though.

Agreed that it takes time to balance characters, though I will say, they could've been had those characters balanced before the game and are just selling as DLC. I could be wrong.

It takes time to balance characters..... You mean like the 8 years between tekken 7 and 8? Lmao are you serious? Tekken 7 released in 2015. This game isn't new from the ground up either.

I don't really have an issue with cosmetic shops. Doesn't effect gameplay at all.

Like I said the dirty part was waiting until after launch and the game was reviewed. We all know damn well that shop was ready to go on day 1 and they held it back on purpose to release as an update.

It's not the shop that's the underlying issue, it's the way it was implemented as an update to obviously avoid it being in the initial review process.

Yeah def but I was thinking if they have an eshop for cosmetics this means they can release the new characters for free instead which will eliminate the competitive imbalance you're complaining about. Won't this be better for the competitive scene? They have to be completely retarded if they don't go that route.

I don't got the time to get into a fighting game. I only play online pvp when it comes to fighters and quite frankly I'm just not looking to add more sweaty mp gaming into my life with my limited time to game as it is. I won't have enough time to play and get gud

I mean, that would be the ideal scenario, but they aren't going to release characters for free just cause they added a cosmetic store. Now you just have to decide what's more important, swag or a bigger roster to choose from. Or if they have it their way..just buy both.

You shouldn't comment on this since you have no idea what you're talking about. There are a ton of different base moves for each character in this game, plus many old moves have different properties. Even the pros who know Tekken 7 like the back of their hand are far out of their elements. Then you also have the new heat system which gives totally unique moves while in heat and a bunch more additional properties to old moves. It's a mess right now and definitely will take a ton of ironing out over time.

Yeah well if they go the route you predicted, that's pretty scummy. I was okay with the news of cosmetics cuz I naturally assumed once they have that stream of revenue they would release characters for free. Namco hasn't been greedy in the past like other companies, so I'll cautiously give them the benefit of the doubt for now to be smart.
