Howdy....

My doctor was in the Army for 30 years as an officer and surgeon.
Although the officers life is far different than enlisted he did some grunt work too in Afghanistan.
He's a cool guy and we've shared some stories although he was 20 years past my era.

I was never lifer material.
I did my 4 years gladly but the elation in getting discharged from active duty is hard to put into words.

Back to it.

When I retired at 20 years I got half pay minus taxes monthly.

if I would have stayed in, basically I would have been going to work every day for half pay. seems stupid to do that.

Pretty much this.

I think there's 2 kinds of people who stay in past 20:

- People who genuinely enjoy serving their country regardless of financial or family sacrifices.

- Super high potential officers who have a chance of becoming general officers and crave the power/money/respect.

can confirm. seems like E-7 thru 9's are gung ho about staying in. for officers, seems it starts @ about O-4 & up.
