This movie was made in 2002 and was about the gangs of native Americans and newly arriving Irish immigrants living in NYC in the mid 1800s.

The basic gist of the movie, directed by Martin Scorsese, was that the native (mainly Irish heritage Americans)...were racist for not wanting newly arriving Irish immigrants (most of whom were put straight into the military) to be given immediate American citizenship.

What struck me in watching this was how this completely parallels what we are seeing today.

Native born Americans not wanting this. And how the Govt took people who were just granted citizenship 1 minute after they arrived on a boat and making them into American soldiers. And those very soldiers then ended up quelling the riots from the Native Americans who were protesting against the new immigrants taking American jobs.

IMO this shows exactly what we are seeing today. You would have to watch the whole movie but it is eerie how similar this is to today with what we are seeing at the border and how the govt is now allowing the men to be granted citizenship in exchange for military servitude.

Reminds me or Star Wars Storm troopers.

In addition the Mayor of NYC at the time kept telling the Daniel Day Lewis character (the butcher) that he needs to welcome and embrace all of the new foreign arrivals for one reason.....votes.

Which is EXACTLY what we are seeing today with the illegals from the southern border.

The DDL character hated it and ended up being killed for it.

Immigration problems are not new. And issues along our Southern border are not new.

I agree. What I am discussing here is the parallel between the Irish of 1860 and today's border issue.

Nothing has changed. The powers that be control it all and they could give a F about the average person.

Yeah, but those Irish assimilated very quickly, and got to work very quickly.

Agree. IMO that was because most of the immigrants coming over were Euro white and Christian.

Today's immigrants? Obviously not the same.


What really struck me in the movie though was how much the Powers that be at the time wanted all the immigrants in the world to come to the US. Regardless of class. For one reason only and they said this in the movie 4 or 5 times.

And again this movie was made in 2002. Way before the illegal immigrant issues we face today. But even back in 1860 it was all about political power. Not doing what is best for the USA.
