You guys building your own NAS or just using Synology?

I've got all the extra parts to build a small NAS and run FreeNAS on it. But a DS224+ looks like an easy option.

The one upside of building is that I could run RAID6 across like eight 2tb drives rather than having to buy two more 14tb drives. But the simplicity of Synology with Tailscale seems attractive too.

Opinions?

Not right now.

But I would just go for a 12100 and a efficient psu.
Unless you need ecc memory or want something that uses even less energy.

For hdds you could look into refurbished wd element drives.
Or if you care about warranty something new.

Don’t get shingled disks.
Most of the hdds under 8tb nowadays are shingled.

the synology you are paying for the convenience and the software. They will stop updating it in like 5-7 years and then might as well sell it due to security holes.

up to you if you want to mess around building your own or not. i would rather use synology.

yeah you can get better hardware for the same price but if all you are doing is running a raid for backup the synology is plenty fast for that.

Yeah, I've already for the parts for the build other than the drives. Have an AM4+ board with one of the A8 APU's sitting around, plus a PSU and RAM. Just need a case and disks. But the 2023J is literally $180. I know it'll be slow, but I don't know if that even matters for simple backups.
