it's probably true of other nations too....people are always trying to get-one-over on their neighbor until a foreign threat unites them and gives them someone else to scheme against and then it's "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and so the domestic rivals unite against the foreign devils

Technically, it is the "united States of America". United is an adjective, not part of the proper name. The States (sovereign) of America (the area) is what the founders intended. That is why "united" wasn't capitalized.
