Mainstream media are keeping us updated.
The bridge - now sitting at the bottom of the river - is closed to traffic.

imagine being some wage slave factory worker or officecel comming back from a double shift at 3am in boston listening to 80s radio
then you plunge 100ft into cold water confused. and have less than 30 seconds to break the glass on your car window while your car tumbles upside down in pitch black darkness. and swim ashore through concrete and steel rubble. and geico gives you $0 for total coverage

This is the live cam that caught the collapse. You can see the ship coming and strike the left main pillar. Reports of power loss.

This bridge, skyway bridge in florida, the original one was also destroyed by a large ship hitting it, so they made the new one with protection for the support columns:

Also for really tight harbors they have local "pilots" who will board large ships and take control of the vessel through that area, the pilots since they live in that area know the channels way better than the foreign captains.
idk if they used pilots here or not.
Finally it could always be a mechanical failure like a stuck open throttle that the pilot/captain was fuked and had no time to recover from

It looks like the ship had a power loss and maybe lost thrust? If he lost thrust it would increase turning radius. Also they for sure cut traffic off from the bridge before the collapse. Obvious with the sudden stop of traffic.
It looks like oscillating power on/off and you can see the thick smoke from the ship's stack when it regains power periodically as they are trying to generate large thrust to sharpen the turning radius. Looks like also poor judgement when they regained power they should have opened up the turn and went around that column instead of trying to hairpin that turn to the inside.
