38 years for me if I retire at 65, but like you said they’ll probably keep us wage slaving until we die.

Live frugally and invest. Budget your leisure. It is very possible that $100k kept and left alone in the stock market today, might be worth millions in 2040 if you put it in the right places. IDK if crypto is the right move, but it could be as well, so not trying to discount it.

I'm 29 years old with ~$17k in a 401k account.

I also have $3500 in checkings, $10k in savings (6/month emergency fund), $7k in a brokerage account in various stocks, and about ~$3k in crypto (eth/btc). I also fortunately have 0 debt. Despite my financial picture being statistically better than probably ~90% of America, I still don't know how a decent retirement will be possible for me.

I think at my current rate I'd have ~$900k-$1M saved for retirement at 65 lulz. I cant imagine working till 45 let alone 65. gonna be a long 35 years.

I'd rather enjoy the now and use smith & wesson as my retirement plan

One thing that is unclear though from your post is your income. Is it $50k/yr? $100k/yr? Perhaps a tighter budget can enable more savings/investing and by proxy an earlier retirement.

Regardless, IMO you're close to behind tbh. I would say the idea of "being ahead of 90% of America" is unrealistic.

Even though you're debt free, your net worth (17k+3.5k+10k+7k+3k) is about $40k. And when taking into consideration equity, for your age range you're actually in the top 48%. Just barely ahead of the median.

And that's being generous btw. If we start looking at you at, let's say $50k net worth at age 30, and use the 30-34 age range, we get top 60%.

I'm not trying to chit on you, just trying to keep you realistic. It's a great thing to be debt free, but even though most people aren't, you're not quite ahead of the crowd, and shouldn't be living or feeling like you are.

You can retire out of country on 1/5th the money you need to retire in the US.

Place is turning to absolute chit yet prices keep rising, make it make sense lmao.

I thought most American's didn't have $1k for an unexpected car repair lol.

In any case, I don't live like i'm ahead or feel like it. I do however feel blessed for what I do have, especially considering where I was even just ~3 years ago. I only got my first professional job about ~2 years ago.

I currently make ~$65k yearly. I expect to be at ~$90k+ in the next 2.5 years.

tbh, I assume I'll be ok. mainly because I'm a minimalist by nature.

i only save $500/month in traditional retirement vehicles (company 401k), but I save an additional $500 each month split about 80/20 between my brokerage acct and crypto, so I guess the picture I painted previously of my financial situation wasn't 100% accurate.

I have about ~$1500/month in disposable income after all bills are paid, I save about ~$1,000 of that each month ($500 in company 401k, $500 in stocks/crypto), sometimes a little less if something unexpected comes up.

USA (and quite possibly the ROW) is going to be a Mad Max/Last of us - post apoc wasteland within 15, say 20 years if not earlier.

As a betting man I'll give it 90% of happening and that's being optimistic.

You do realise this don't you ? Wouldn't be worrying about that pensionbut I would start learning about prepping/ food storage prep etc .... just saying ....

medicare, moreso.

I imagine many people who may have the $$$ to retire at a younger age don't because of the need for health insurance which is tied to employment.

Barring all out nuclear war, legit alien invasion, or some unforeseen climate-esque event I doubt anything that dramatic happens in the next ~75 years.

itll more likely be a slow descent into abject poverty for the masses, the U.S. will deteriorate into the slums of Brazil over several decades first, long before some mad-max scenario.

Mad-max doom porn is what wagies fetishize as an end to their cubecel state of existence when in reality they will likely die a wagie, as will their kids, and their grandkids before the country/world ends as we know it.
