Saving Private Ryan is really annoying

Not watched in years so I watched it again. The battle scenes are epic and gruesome but I can never get over that interpreter beta boy who pussied out the entire movie until right at the end when he shot that alpha who egged him on thinking he didn't have the balls to do it.
Dude had perfect line of sight of about 15 Germans laying prone lighting up his squad and did nothing. He let his other brother in arms take a slow knife direct to the heart while he laid on the stairs crying.
I get that Spielberg was trying to show that all kinds of men were forced into battle but it makes for frustrating movie watching
