My mechanic friend told me cambelts are a scam
He says you can easily safely double the mileage and time interval on modern cambelts without any risk of them snapping, manufacturers just shorten the interval so car owners take their car in to the dealer for a hefty fee to have it replaced. I've never had a cambelt snap even if it was super old.

A lot of smaller engines will use timing chains, which are pretty much invincible. I wouldn't dikk around with a belt though.
