They hate it when you criticize the people in charge and suggest they are incompetent for the amount of debt and reckless spending "How dare you I've known him my entire life". The thing about small towns in many have an established "good old boy" network and their family/friends/former classmates etc will support them regardless of what's going on in the town. Many of them to the point of threatening violence/legal action.
