Does it feel like this country has gotten really selfish in the last 15 years or so?

In the past the wealthy were kind of expected to volunteer their time and energy to improve society. You can see this in the last generation of billionaires like

Bill Gates
Warren Buffett
Michael Bloomberg

who where greedy and ruthless but also pledged to give away large portions of their wealth to charity

Compare this with current billionaires like

Elon Musk
Jeff Bezos
Bernard Arnault

who seem to be most focused on who can buy the biggest island or have the most mistresses or the largest yacht.

You also see this change in mentality in threads on the misc - when people contemplate early retirement they don't think about how to serve the community that made their good financial fortune possible. Instead they dream of expatriating to Thailand to bang hoors or living a minimalist lifestyle rotting and playing video games.

People say the boomers were selfish but it seems like that's nothing compared to the younger generations who are so selfish over 1/2 of them don't even want to raise children.

Do you think America has gotten more selfish and if so what do you blame for the change in mentality?

Everyone is selfish. and tbh I don't blame them. Obviously in an ideal world this wouldn't be the case, but our society has ingrained in us and brought us up to look out for ourselves only, for the most part, with generosity maybe extending to your spouse or children. Even family is a crapshoot these days, I know more people who are on the outs with their family than those who have good relationships with them all.

Musk reinvests his money into stuff that advances humanity. His money isn't sitting in a bank account, it's stock shares of companies he owns. He actually doesn't live like most billionaires.

Musk and Bezos are decades younger that the 3 older Billionaires you brought up. Gates is a mess, donating many millions of dollars to media outlets so they'll give him good coverage, and most of his other donations are for things he can later invest in to make more money.


Not sure why you expect dudes of the general public in their 20s-40s to have the same outlook on retirement as people decades older. I don't think people are more selfish, but less and less people belong to local civic groups. Communities are less connected in general, which means less involvement. And childless people are way more prone to YOLO!! no matter what generation they're from. There are more childless people now so YOLO is more recognizable.

It's more narcissism than just selfishness.
What appears as a charitable cause is more about some rich azzhole putting his name on a building or naming a foundation after himself.
Bloomberg, Trump, Milken, Gates, Cuban, Geffen...are all shapeshifting vipers just pushing their brand under the guise of helping others.

So if they're not involved in civic groups, not having children, more prone to YOLO (by which I assume you mean consumerism) and less involved in their communities, how is that not more selfish?No doubt guys this rich have whole teams of people devoted to their brand image (Zuckerberg does for sure). But that aside, I have to believe donating over a billion dollars to eliminate polio - that's not a "get your name in the papers" amount of money. That's real money, even for the world's richest man. And it's one of like 20 projects he's doing.

It's also where their money goes to once they pass on. Elon Musk's ex wife already has hundreds of millions set to go out to these far left, liberal, progressive terrible places to donate.

Watch a documentary for once. He basically banked his entire net worth on bankrolling and making SpaceX work, and it was unlikely, they failed like 4 times and he was most likely about to go completely broke and he didn't care, he wanted the space travel advancements to happen. He was deeply tied into SpaceX and despite unlikely odds they finally had success with a specific mission.


He isn't totally in it for the money.

He also bought Twitter for $44 billion thinking he could help society by putting a stop to the wide scale censorship of some right leaning ideas, knowing it was unlikely to be profitable.

Totally ruthless in business but they also had a major positive impact with their philanthropy.

A lot of people hate Gates because he's leftist but he's also done some seriously life changing stuff like help eliminate a bunch of different diseases in poorer countries.

Lol..this isn't something new. Yeah it's more prevalent today but humans have always been selfish. We're the only form of life with a conciousness (or what most assume is our souls) and the only form of life in nature that puts more stock in things we want over those we need.
