My nephew loves this movie. Both the original and the crappy sequel. I was a massive fan of the original when it came out in the mid-90s. Space Jam, along with the Power Rangers movie, were really the defining cinematic moments of my childhood. But watching it back, I can't help but notice how rushed it feels. Any of you boys get this as well? The official runtime is 88 minutes. This is with that five minute intro of Jordan highlights, as well as like eight minutes of ending credits. I also get the sense that a couple scenes were put in there merely for filler. Like when Bugs & Daffy have to go and get Jordan's old shorts. And you don't even really see Bugs & Daffy at all in that scene. They didn't take the time to even animate them, just their voices & shadows. And some of the Bill Murray & Newman stuff felt like it was a bit stretched out to me. Stretched to eat up more screen time.

I suspect they wanted to get the movie out while Jordan's failed baseball career was still relatively fresh in the public's memory. But I don't timing was all that necessary though. Looking back, I wish they would've taken another year or so to put together a much more fluid, well-rounded movie. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy it. Its a classic. But, in my honest opinion, it could've been substantially better than what it was.

Nevermind. Forgot this forum is full of decrepit, 80s-loving geezers who think Knight Rider is the greatest show ever made. Just no room here for all this hip new youngin' stuff like Space Jam & pogs.

Honestly I’d love to live with the mentality and brain composition or lack there of that with everything fuked in the world my main concern is space jam.

Because it WAS rushed. There were two different concepts that were pitched for an animation/live-action cross-over movie.

The original concept was a movie calledCats Don't DanceIt was suppose to be a singing movie with musical numbers and all that chit, but Starring Michael Jackson. Michael bailed at the last minute, after the majority of the animation portions of the movie were completed so WB sold it to Turner (which no longer exists as a company), but the live action script was re-written as a basketball flick instead of a musical and managed to get Michael Jordan. The movie only performed well because (outside of Who Framed Roger Rabbit) it was unique for its time, and it had star power (Jordan at his peak) behind it.

The new Space Jam however, is hot garbage. I'm not one to pick up on bad acting, but LeBron and the kids all had horrendous acting and the looney tunes characters are just, not funny at all.

Wasn't aware of all this. Why'd Michael Jackson pull out of that project? Seems like something he'd be really in to. I had read up on the story of all the failed concepts for a sequel. And how they somehow settled on that rabidly lackluster Brendon Frasier flick in the early 2000s. Never heard of the Cats Don't Dance stuff though.

I actually didn't have a big problem with Lebron's acting. I was fine to cut him some slack on that, even though I'm not a huge fan. The movie just sucked to me. Really felt like the result of a bunch of talentless executives, with zero imagination, putting their uncreative brains together and churning out a movie they believed would make them the most money. Too many chefs in the kitchen. Chefs who can't even cook. It was a big disappointment, and I didn't even expect it to be any good.

You liked it in the first post, now the movie has always sucked to you.

It’s a kids movie they don’t have long attention spans, 60 minutes is about the longest a kid can sit still and that’s a well behaved kid

Cats Don't Dance was eventually released, and is actually a pretty good movie (your nephew would definitely like it) but it flopped at the boxoffice because it was poorly advertised and studios were slowly starting to get away from hand drawn animation (for CGI) due to the success of Toy Story. Michael Jackson bailed on the project because he was already in the middle of another song that he was working on at the time.

I really dont' know what they could have done to fix the new Space Jam. Outside of the acting the plot was all over the place.

I always forget about that Brenden Fraiser Looney Tunes movie. I don't remember it being bad, its just oddly forgettable.

What are you talking about, my guy? I enjoy the first one, despite it being rushed. I despise the second one. Its terrible. Why is that confusing?

You should give Cool World a watch. Has the animated characters + cartoons coexisting. It's like a much more adult Roger Rabbit.
