Two brothers appeared at Liverpool magistrates' court accused of crimes relating to a library which was set on fire during the riots. 28-year-old Adam Wharton appeared first, admitting burglary with intent to steal from the Spellow Lane Library Hub, which suffered severe damage to the ground floor due to the fire.

Wharton, who has 16 previous convictions for 26 offences, including robbery and burglary, stood in the dock at Liverpool Magistrates' Court wearing a grey, prison-issue tracksuit. As he left the dock, Wharton said: "Nice one, ****ty arse judge man."

Josh Kellett, 29, of Southcroft, Washington, also known as Josh Major, pleaded guilty to violent disorder in the city centre. He was seen “throwing a stone” at police while also wearing a balaclava. Mr Garside told the court that Kellett was identified from his distinctive tattoos and arrested. The court was told he had 20 previous convictions for 32 offences, including a public order offence and violence. Sandra Fife, defending, did not make an application for bail.

Leanne Hodgson, 43, of Holborn Road, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to violent disorder. The court heard she was caught on footage pushing a large bin towards a line of police. Mr Garside said: “There was a large crowd cheering and joining in. She was arrested at her home address.” The court heard Hodgson has six previous convictions for 11 offences. Annalisa Moscardini, defending, said: “She has alcohol problems.
