Are high end/expensive GPU's worth it?
Now that I'm making a bit of $ with my landscaping job, I can start to buy some cool electronics stuff. I've always been a big on the idea of great gameplay and mediocre graphics. But I'm not sure if this was just pure cope/broke.

its worth it in a sense of not feeling the need to upgrade for a long time.. and of course its very game dependant. some games can run on potatoes like league of legends / cs / valorant / etc.
if you are playing newly released games, definitely get the a high end gpu with as much vram as possible.. games are hitting those limits despite what people say and it does cause performance issues.
I have an rtx 3090 24gb ram and I don't feel the need to upgrade, however depending on the latest rtx 5000 series coming out end of this year and early next year I may upgrade just for the sake of it, but not because I feel like I need to because i'm still smashing all games at my 1440p resolution.

no. I still have an rtx 3070 and the only game that stresses it at 4k is cyberpunk, and I don't even play that on a regular basis.

law of diminishing returns boyo.
and you dont need high end to beat say a ps5.
depending on how into it you are i would say get something between a 3060 to 4070.
if you were the type to really appreciate a 4090 then you wouldnt be making this thread you would already be all over that chit, some people that is there thing but you pay out the ass for the last 10-20 percent.

same here. i always "just had" a graphics card incase i felt like playing games but hardly ever do. i lose interest in them quickly. i got a used 3060 and dont even use it or my ps5.

Just wait for the PS5 Pro. The specs have already leaked and you'd need to spend around $8000 for the equivalent PC, but the Pro is rumoured to cost only $700

3080 runs most games pretty well at 1440p on my ultrawide, not sure how much of a difference the liquid cooling makes but it looks cool at least.
I was thinking about upgrading when the new Nvidia cards come out to play at 4K but I'm pretty impressed with my new OLED, playing Ghost of Tsushima looks incredible right now.
I would definitely go the 4080 or 4090 if I was building now though.

I Aim for 1440p 165hz gaming which any 4xxx card should be able to pull esp if the game has DLSS.

I always get cards that are higher end. I would hate to be forced to play at mediocre settings, I didn't build a PC to do that

Bought a 4090 last year, IMO hasn't been worth it with how few games I play with it.

Well what are your goals? If you want to have the best long term performance and don't mind the expense then yeah it's worth it. Otherwise probably better off doing the mid-range and upgrading over time.

PS5 on the other hand has 60 in all their 1st and 2rd party limited releases as well as 99% of 3rd party launches.

No one is "upgrading" consoles anyways. Not sure why Coal Man man is disillusioned with choice, you get a ps5 pro if Sony decides to market one or else you play ps5, that's it. Or I guess ps4 if you're really down bad.

With my RTX 3070 I play most games at 4K resolution, because it's hooked up to my LG OLED TV. Only caveat is that I have to lower the graphics settings to low or medium and be okay with 40-50fps.
Sure I can up my settings and get higher FPS if I downsize to 1080p or 1440p, but fck that.
Some games don't look any different in 1440p tho. Like Sand Land.

Depends on the goal. You a streamer / video maker? You do any graphics design work? Do you mine crypto? Have lots of cash but don't mind blowing $1k+ to rock your world in 4k/VR (and assuming you already have or plan to buy nicer monitors / VR accessories)?
If none of the above, then typically would say stay away from the latest gen NVIDIA GTX/RTX ##80 Ti or higher. However, MSRP on these GPUs has gotten terribly worse so would reckon the new rule of thumb is GTX/RTX ##80 or higher should be avoided if you get the newest gen. Srs. GTX 1080 back in the day was $600 MSRP, yet the RTX 4080's MSRP was $1200.
NVIDIA's latest trend is to release "SUPER" GPUs that are actually stronger than the predecessor (IE RTX 4070 SUPER is about 15% better than RTX 4070), 1.5-2 years or so after the latest gen is out - as something else for them to sell from the same silicon before they release the next gen after. Thankfully they typically make it a bargain in comparison by pricing it with either the same or lower MSRP. 4080 SUPER was $1k MSRP for example ($200 less than 4080 MSRP). Just a little extra tip for when you see things like "RTX 2070" and "RTX 2070 SUPER" and wanna know the difference.
The main difference between the RTX 40 and RTX 30 series really, aside from the implied better hardware and performance in itself, is the latest version of DLSS (3.0 / 3.5). There's some other things too, but that's the most important feature for gamers IMO - the newer version is even better and basically gives the newer GPUs compatible with it (RTX 40) an extra performance edge.
Typically it used to be you would expect the newer gen's model number GPU (RTX 4060 for example) would be as good or slightly better than the prior gen's higher model number GPU (RTX 3070). But this isn't true this time around for a lot of the mid-level cards.
Before anyone can recommend what GPU to get, we need to know what kind of games, resolution, and budget you have. Otherwise, just buy whichever -60, -70, or -80 card fits your budget and your system power supply.

Leaks are showing that the 5090 is now 83% of the full GB202 die, so they effectively doubled the price of the 80 card.
I don't think we're going to have another 1080ti or 3080 situation for quite some time.
