I saw Trap by M.Night Shyamalan.

It sounds like it was a very divisive movie, but I enjoyed it. I always go to see Shyamalan's movies because I've always found something interesting in them and he usually keeps good tension going IMO.


Premise is a serial killer is lured into a packed concert hall which is then surrounded by police, so no way out. Josh Hartnett is the main character and needs to figure a way out. Hartnett played a great and convincing character, I totally believed he was a manipulative, cunning and clever psychopath who wouldn't be fooled by obvious tricks. The premise actually forced him to do some Hitman-esque kinda chit and that was cool. I wish there were more of it.

It kept me guessing and kept me doing what ifs and working out possible ways he could escape.

But a negative was how it felt like the first 2/3 of the movie was just advertising Shyamalan's daughter's music (she plays the singer at the concert) and there was just this movie plot around it. Plus it did feel somewhat implausible overall.

Film has no overall twist, though. I wonder if Shyamalan got tired of his trademark twists, but he could have done some really good twists here. Some of my ideas for twists included Hartnett not even being the serial killer they're looking for - there's actually another killer in there and he just happens to be a serial killer too but they have no idea who he might be. Or that Hartnett was actually the killer's current victim, and the whole premise was the killer having his family hostage and Hartnett needing to get caught and falsely confess to the killing, but he tries to escape. Or that he wasn't the killer, but had been hurt by him, and was trying to find him and kill him before the police got him. Or, the police are there at the direction of the CIA to trap everyone and make the concert into some clandestine mind-control experiment or something, or some sort of false flag or something.




As for a way of escaping, srsly, when Kid Cudi winked at Hartnett I actually thought if he pretended to be homo and left the concert with him, it would have been a decent plan to escape.

Im not much into the 'horror' genre (not sure if this even qualifies) but when I saw the trailer I thought it looked like a really cool premise.

But I wasnt gonna sit thru 2 hours in a theater so I just read the synopsis on wiki and was surprised to see theres no real twist that isnt revealed in the trailer. The movie seems to just be him looking for ways to escape. I thought it was going to be more existential and ambiguous about his circumstance and status as the killer.

That could be part of it, though. The trailer could have led you to believe it was just a trap for Hartnett but there was really something else going down the whole time. There's quite a few ways you could have made an awesome twist, I listed some in my spoiler tags.

1. Why would the police be targeting the venue? Do they believe he is the killer, or do they just believe for some random reason the killer will be there? If the former then why don't they just stop his vehicle on the way there, when he exits it, or even when he leaves after the concert?

2. Are they intending to search everybody there, or just him for evidence? I assume he isn't carrying any weapons or missing/dead people's ID's on him & he could delete any evidence possibly on his phone, or put a security lock on it.

Both are explained in the film, I think the explanation they come up with does make sense and isn't implausible.

That dudes movies always start off with what seems is going to be some epic twist but always fall flat. The only one I thought was decent of his was Unbreakable.
